This album has been around for a while but I was rather late in discovering it. It has some cool dance / trance grooves as the first track 'The Fires of Ork I' amply shows. A repeated almost alarm like sound combines with bell chimes. We then get various bleeps and a four note loop. A deep bass dance rhythm starts up low in the mix. I can imagine with the right lighting the effect would be almost hallucinogenic. The beat keeps coming and going and some half heard vocal samples are added to the brew- wild! A sound which is half way between a bell tone and a throb acts like the pulsating life force of the second number 'Gebirge'. All is calm and relaxed with various sci fi type bleeps and fizzes adding a little detail to this atmospheric beginning.

A three note loop is introduced giving a mysterious quality to a track which is steadily becoming dream like. The odd distorted word sample is used and this conjures up the feeling of being semi conscious, the mind flitting this way then that. The voices start to become clearer but in a language I don't understand. Things are now taking on a sinister feel, the voices becoming steadily more prominent only dying away a few minutes from the end. After a tranquil beginning 'Talk to the Stars' develops into a sequential / rhythmic number, the notes / sounds used in the sequence have real attitude being almost spat from the speakers. Female vocals are talked / whispered contrasting energy with beauty.

Another dance beat increases the energy but at the same time adds to the chilled feeling rather than being too much in ye face. After a number of 'false' starts 'The Facts of Life' sort of plods into existence on the back of a very simple sequence and repeated pad sounds. It holds the same pattern with the occasional embellishment for the first five minutes until various lead lines start to came and go. A gentle rhythm provides a backbone around which the melodies weave- the piano one being particularly effective. I found it all extremely relaxing, even hypnotic, though it did make me want to nod off. Another interesting percussive loop was added near the end which woke me up enough to appreciate some more exquisite lead lines.

An extremely deep bass beat shakes the foundations and twittering cosmic sweeps shimmer from the speakers as 'The Fires of Ork II' gets underway. A no nonsense rhythmic, percussive loop is then tossed into the fray. Through it all a voice can be heard talking about thunder and 'burning with the fires of ork'- or something. We strip down to sequence and shimmers then one by one all the previous elements come back. This is a very interesting album the more powerful bits especially the two parts to the title track working best for me. (DL)

Nederlandstalige versie

Dit album draait al een tijdje mee maar ik ontdekte het echter nu pas. Op de eerste track "The Fires of Ork I" staan enkele coole dance/trance grooves. Een huilende alarmtoon herhaalt zich tussen luidende klokken. Dan krijgen we allerlei bliepjes en een 4-noten loopje. Een diepe dance bas komt uit de mix naar voren. Met de juiste lichteffecten moet dit heel hallucinogerend werken. De drums komen en gaan, enkele stemgeluiden worden er ook nog tussen geworpen – wild! Een klank ergens tussen een klok en gebons gedraagt zich als de pulserende levensstroom van het tweede nummer "Gebirge".

Alles verloopt kalm en rustig met enkele sci-fi bliepjes, die wat variatie brengen in dit atmosferische begin. De introductie van een 3-noten loopje geeft dit alles een mysterieus gevoel, een beetje als in een droom. Een gekke vervormde stemsample geeft je het gevoel dat je maar half bij je bewustzijn bent – je geest raakt verward. De stemmen worden duidelijker, doch spreken in een onbekende taal. Het voelt nu heel onheilspellend aan, de stemmen komen meer op de voorgrond en sterven dan uit enkele minuten voor het einde.

Na een kalm begin verandert "Talk to the Stars" in een sequence/ritme gebaseerd nummer. De gebruikte klanken zijn echt sterk, ze kunnen zo uit de luidsprekers spatten. Vrouwelijke stemmen verrijken deze energie met schoonheid. Een dance beat verhoogt nogmaals het energiepeil, maar meer op het chill-out niveau dan op het dance vlak.

"The Facts of Life" start een paar maal "fout" en gaat dan over in een eenvoudige sequence en heldere bewegingen. Verschillende sololijnen komen en gaan. Een mooi ritme zorgt dan voor de ondersteuning bij een aantal melodieën, waarvan de piano erg doeltreffend werkt. Erg relaxed allemaal, bijna hypnotisch, alhoewel ik toch begon te knikkebollen. Tegen het einde wordt er een percussieve loop ingebracht die me terug voldoende wakker maakte om te genieten van enkele verfijnde solo's.

"The Fires of Ork II" begint met zware beats, zo diep dat ze de fundering deden trillen, alsook kosmische twitters. Percussie om U tegen te zeggen gooit zich ook mee in het gevecht. Door al dit geweld door kan je ook nog een stem horen die iets zegt over "thunder" en over "burning with the fires of Ork" of zoiets. De sequence wordt afgebouwd, alsook de effecten en dan komen één voor één alle elementen terug aan bod.
