This is another very welcome re-issue on the Ambient World label. 'African Virus Part 1' begins with lovely deep breathy dark drones. It's all rather cosmic. Strange samples can be heard as we float into 'Part 2'. It's like listening to the sound of a subway but very faintly as if on the edge of a dream. This is incredibly atmospheric stuff. A sort of distorted chant, like a call to prayer, joins the dream. The pads now sound like waves breaking.

'Part 3' is rather Ethnic sounding which for the most part works well but I could have done without the rather irritating wind instrument at the beginning. This doesn't last long however before being replaced by a high register rhythmic loop. Further heavier beats are added. Basically what we have is drums and more drums with hardly any electronic colouring. In the third minute a bass line is added to what is already a syncopated blast. A minute later that damned wind instrument returns. Thankfully it soon departs again and even more rhythm of the tabla variety is chucked in brewing up quite a storm.

At first I though 'Part 4' had taken us back to the cosmos but less then two minutes in a pleasant playful rhythm starts up contrasting markedly with the dark backing. This departs, well almost, a couple of minutes later (it can just be heard in the background) only to return for the end of the track. It's as if we have visited some fun planet and having left are drawn back for more. Not only that, it can be heard deep in the mix in 'Part 5'. We have moved on but it still resides in our memories. The rest of the track consists of more crowd samples then a strange oddball collection of beats. It's all rather curious. The final part is another lovely deep space floater. Its dark and eerie and all the better for it. (DL)

Nederlandstalige versie

Dit is weer een welgekomen heruitgave op het World Ambient label. "African Virus part 1" begint met erg mooie diepe donkere drones, allemaal heel kosmisch. Op de overgang naar "Part 2" worden er vreemde sampels gehoord. Het klinkt een beetje ondergronds, als in een droom. Dit is ongelooflijk atmosferisch. Een soort vervormde zang, als uit een gebed, vervoegd de droom. De paden klinken nu als het breken van golven.

"Part 3" klinkt vrij etnisch en voor het grootste deel werkt dit goed maar voor mij kon het zonder de hoge ritmische loop. Verder komen er hevige beats bij. Aan de basis hebben we enkel drums en nog eens drums, vrijwel zonder elektronische opvulling. Rond de derde minuut wordt er een baslijn toegevoegd, een heel syncopatisch geheel. Een minuut later komt er terug die hoge loop bij maar hij verdwijnt gelukkig vrij snel en wordt vervangen door een tabla ritme, de storm wordt nog heviger. Eerst dacht ik dat
