Pentamerous Metamorphosis
The magnificently titled ‘Pentamerous Metamorphosis’ opens with ‘Alpha Phase’ which takes a while to get going but develops into a robust chugger, heavy with percussive detail. The half way point of this 17 minute opener heralds delicious piano detail which changes the emphasis, the rhythmics reappear rejuvenated, and the overall lighter stance does wonders for the piece. ‘Beta Phase’ is superb ambient/chill which rides on ethereal choral waves until a bass sequence hints at structure. ‘Gamma Phase’ presents a sublimely infectious motif which spans the metamorphosis between drift and rhythm. Again piano, with an electric edge, provides excellent support before the beat really kicks home in magnificent fashion.

‘Delta Phase’ contrasts jangly guitar with colossal deep bass sequencing, and again the piece cannot be second guessed as mesmeric spacier sections appear only to be absorbed into more rhythmics. Finally ‘Epsilon Phase’ charts the low registers once more, with the mid ground occupied by industrial effects. Then the deceptively strong melody starts to take shape and another brilliant piece develops.

This album is emphatic proof that GC are much more than an one album wonder. If they carry on in this form we may well have another Spyra on our hands. (GG)
