This is my favourite RMI album in some time. It has everything, fantastic long atmospheric sections but also stonking sequences - you even get a few minutes of melody at one point! There are just two very long tracks giving them plenty of space to let their imagination run wild and for ideas to fully develop. The title track begins with shimmering tones conjuring up images of deep space. Its all very restrained. Other effects are added, a bit like jangling chains, somewhat metallic sounding and rather eerie. After a couple of minutes a slow pulse starts adding to the ominous feeling still further. Gary contributes strange noises on his guitar as the other boys overdose on cosmic effects. Kettle drums rumble like thunder.
At ten minutes we get a brief passage of tinkling calmness with piano touches. The light momentarily shines through but it isn't long before a melancholy lead line can be heard low in the mix. The piano momentarily becomes more prominent but then the first sequence strikes up emerging out of the darkness - bass laden with high hat splashes. The guitar now provides a purposeful lead. The sequence becomes more and more powerful as does the guitar. The brake is taken off and everything is let rip - wonderful stuff! Just when you think things can't get any more intense another fantastic sequence is thrown into the maelstrom. It sounds like all three lads are giving it everything and yet it all comes together so perfectly, so much happening it will take many a listen to take it all in. Things only calm down again with three minutes to go as we float to the finish on Mellotron sounds.
The second and final track 'Echoes' begins in a similar fashion to the previous number being a collage of electronic sounds and effects. At about five minutes we get a little more structure with a restrained lead line and organ sounds. We then travel through one cosmic section after another- all superbly atmospheric and very descriptive. Just before the ten minute mark the tension really starts to build, a drum line / sequencer combination hurtles forward like a steam train then in comes an extremely melodic electric guitar. The sequences are initially in complete contrast to the delicacy of the guitar but as they get more blistering and increase to earthquake proportions Gary starts to axe it and no prisoners are taken. Crashing snare drums and howling guitar add to the excitement still further. This is an extremely powerful section containing some of my favourite sequences RMI have done. I wish it could have gone on forever but unfortunately sanity returns at around the twenty-five minute mark as the sequences gently disappear into floating pads.
Soon afterwards things take a turn onto the dark side again. Some of the sounds have a faintly vocal quality to them, a bit ghostly even. Things then sound as if we have entered a swamp with water dripping from the trees. Its all very subtle with only a few sounds used but each carefully chosen for best atmospheric effect. (DL)
Dit wordt nu mijn geliefkoosde RMI album. Het heeft alles, geweldige lange atmosferische partijen, pittige sequences, zelfs fantastische melodieën. Er staan 2 lange tracks op die de ruimte geven om de verbeelding te laten ontwikkelen en om ideeën te laten groeien. De titeltrack begint met schitterende klanken, ruimtelijke beelden oproepend. Het wordt allemaal erg in bedwang gehouden. Er worden andere effecten toegevoegd, als rammelende kettingen, metaalachtig klinkend en vrij angstwekkend. Na enkele minuten start er een pulsering, het onheilspellend gevoel nog versterkend. Gary voegt vreemde klanken toe met zijn gitaar, de andere jongens zorgen voor nog meer kosmische effecten. Pauken rommelen als de donder. Na 10 minuten krijgen we een kalme passage met pianoklanken. Het licht begint te schijnen, toch duurt het nog even vooraleer een melancholische solo begint. De piano komt meer op de voorgrond en dan verrijst de eerste sequence uit het duister, met bassen en hihats. De gitaar brengt nu een mooie zinvolle solo. De sequence wordt krachtiger en krachtiger, evenals de gitaar. Alle remmen zijn los, alles scheurt open – wondermooi! Op het moment dat je denkt dat het niet intenser meer kan, wordt een tweede sequence in de maalstroom geworpen. Het klinkt alsof de drie jongens echt alles geven en alles past zo goed bij elkaar. Er gebeurt zoveel dat dit echt verschillende keren beluisterd moet worden om alles te horen. Drie minuten voor het einde wordt alles terug kalm, om zwevend op Mellotronklanken te eindigen. De tweede en laatste track “Echoes” begint op dezelfde manier als de vorige, zijnde een samenspel van elektronische klanken en effecten. Na een vijftal minuten komt er wat meer structuur in door een sololijn en wat orgelklanken. We reizen van de éne kosmische partij naar de andere, allen heel atmosferisch. Juist voor de 10 minuten begint er zich een spanning op te bouwen, een combinatie drums/sequences raast voort als een stoomtrein……er volgt een heel melodische gitaarsolo. Eigenlijk zijn de sequences in fel contrast met de delicate klank van de gitaar, maar als deze nog striemender worden en proporties krijgen van een aardbeving, begint ook Gary het mes erin te zetten. Verder komen er nog snaredrums en meer huilende gitaren bij, nog meer spanning. Dit is een enorm krachtig gedeelte, de beste sequences bevattende die RMI ooit heeft gemaakt. Dit mocht nog langer blijven duren, maar spijtig genoeg keert het gezond verstand terug als na 25 minuten de sequences zachtjes oplossen in zachte golven. Nu keren we terug naar het duister. Sommige klanken klinken een beetje als zachte stemmen, toch een beetje spookachtig. Dan klinkt het alsof we in een moeras terechtkomen, met water druipend uit de bomen. Het is allemaal erg subtiel, met maar enkele klanken overblijvend, maar deze zijn zo nauwkeurig gekozen voor dit mooie atmosferische effect. (DL)
