Positive Waves
Compact Disc / 10 tracks / 46.52 mins

Tony Red is the guy who writes and produces nearly all the Think Floyd stuff and basically if you like those albums you should also like this (at least the earlier tracks anyway) as for the most part its another CD of Pink Floyd and Roger Waters inspired music done extremely well. I have probably already written enough for you to decide if want to buy this but I will go into a little more detail just in case.

'Birds of Spring' begins with an acoustic guitar melody, sax and soft pads but gets more ominous and questioning as it progresses with some really poignant vocals and expressive electric guitar work. Deep rhythms surge from the speakers giving 'Ringing Bells' a dark but energetic beginning. This track would have been perfectly at home on 'The Wall', think 'Comfortably Numb'. 'Positive Waves' sounds like it could be semi autobiographical. Again 'The Wall' and even 'Pros and Cons' come to mind. Though the lyrics are fairly positive there is a vaguely melancholy feel about the track.. 'Once in a Life' is a much brighter sounding number both musically and lyrically, cheerful even. Don't really know what 'In a Haze' is about but its a real cracker. It gets into an infectious groove and just doesn't let go. Wonderful stuff! 'Riding the Train' begins with bell shimmers and a heavy beat as if someone is banging hard on a thick wooded door. Orchestral pads take us forwards then its back to conventional realms with an acoustic guitar lead line. Its different musically but seems to have a similar message to 'Positive Waves'. 'The Way we Are' initially sounds very Waters'ish but then takes on a life of its own - very tender with fantastic lyrics. 'Licence to Groove'- great guitar, fun lyrics- and don't forget to groove! 'Along With the Breeze' features a beautiful acoustic / electric guitar combination- just about as far as you can get from Electronic Music, more like a laid back dreamy sunny day pop song, rather Chris Rea actually but with a very different vocal delivery.

'Mellow Things' is an instrumental which rounds the album off, its somewhat too "mellow" for my tastes but then again I'm probably just a miserable old sod. (DL)
