Glenn Deardorff
Primordial Mariner
How many times have we reviewed albums saying “ignore the cliched cover and imagery because the music’s great”. Too many times you’d probably say. Well, I’m afraid I’ve got to say it again. Visually this album screams New Age indifference yet the music is a surging example of synthesised textures at their magnificent best. Space Music it most certainly is, yet this doesn’t so much portray the ethereal dark matter which populates the void of space, more it creates imagery of the most striking and impressive aspects to be found both within and outside of our solar system.

The music is sequenced in parts, but the most striking feature is the lush, dense, extended pads which swell and flow as seamless unending vistas. When present, melody is subtle and pitched at just the right level, and the music conjures the warmth of a sun and the cold depths of a desolate planet with equal expertise. The sound quality is top notch, and fans of Steve Roach will find his “spatial enhancements” add lustre to an extremely well executed package.

Nothing new, but like a well made SciFi blockbuster we never seem to tire of this sort of quality. (GG)
