This must be one of the most truly 'different' CDs I have heard in quite some time. The sounds are like nothing I have heard before, at a guess the use of pre-sets is avoided at all costs. Every track is in a constant state of shift detail being added here and removed there whilst fascinating lead lines just make their presence felt without intruding. Rhythmically its also inventive but really its often very difficult to separate each individual element in the mesmerising heady brew.

'The Beginning of all Things' starts with humming and other swirling sounds as well as insect noises which form an interesting backdrop to a delicate lead line. Its not that melodic and remains firmly in the middle of the mix forming just one element to the fascinating tapestry of sound. There is also a simple loop / sequence but again this is only one small part of quite a complex picture. Further gloops, bleeps and cosmic effects are added as well as an organ lead. Some elements are rather cosmic but then others are completely unclassifiable. The title track is next. Faint growling / machine sounds are heard low in the mix and a rhythmic loop enters. A really nice fat, but of course, unique lead slowly rises and falls as the rhythm becomes increasingly train like.

'Echoes from Stone Part 1' has a slow dripping type sequence emerging out of an undulating drone. More drones / pad sounds are added then a percussive rhythmic line appears out of the hazy backing. It made my mind think of swirling psychedelic colours- no need for iffy substances here just let the music do it all for you. Wow what a trip! 'Excursion' begins with odd windy sounds and waves breaking. A tinkling melodic loop starts up. Many other sound effects are liberally thrown in some of them sounding like rummaging around in a scrap yard whilst robots maintain the rhythmic backing.

The last track was a little challenging but so is 'Ancient Island'. The beat is ever so slightly tribal. Around it are a liberally sprinkled a number of sounds. Its hard to work out how exactly they relate to each other. These die away in the fourth minute as the track regroups. Its still hard to follow any particular thread however, maybe that's the point. It could be that we are being treated to something of a new experience in sound. 'Truth and Waiting' is a much easier track to get on with. A lovely melodic loop appears out of a shimmering background. Its as if we are in a beautiful garden, the sun causing rainbows through a fountain. A relaxing rhythm starts up getting the head to nod slightly. A more upfront lead comes in giving it that little extra oomph, I'm still chilled though. Could it be that after a couple of more difficult numbers the mind is now being given time to relax?

A deep throb like the sound of some vast engine gets 'A Language for Shadows' underway. An echoing pulse as if someone is hammering from the depths of the Earth becomes a focus of attention. This is quite a dark track which gets more intense as additional sounds and effects are added. Its like being in some nightmare unable to get out. With three minutes to go however the mood unexpectedly lightens as a bright loop enters and takes us to the end. Another percussive train rhythm and fast drumming give the first few moments of 'Echoes from Stone Part 2' an energetic feel. Then suddenly all descends to tranquil pads through which are faintly recited a few lines of poetry. It's all extremely effective and as with the first part of this track I really liked it.

'Reverse Alchemy' is an atmospheric closer. There is rhythm in it but it tends to come in flourishes adding detail here and there. It's rather pleasant but also fascinating at the same time. I have played this album a number of times and still don't know if I actually enjoy it or not, I'm still trying to get my mind in tune with a completely new listening experience. I certainly don't dislike it however and have a great deal of respect for the musician taking his own path and coming up with something that is to these ears genuinely new and fresh. (DL)

Dit is een kompleet verschillende CD dan wat ik de laatste tijd hoorde. De klanken zijn zo anders, er zit vast geen enkele preset bij. Elk track is constant aan het evolueren, details komen en gaan en fascinerende solo's laten hun aanwezigheid blijken zonder zich op te dringen. Ritmisch is dit alles ook zeer doordacht maar het is soms erg moeilijk om elk detail te ontdekken in deze hypnotiserende mengeling.

"The Beginning of all Things" begint met zoemende en dwarrelende klanken, alsook insectengeluiden die tezamen een interessante achtergrond vormen voor een delicate solo. Deze is niet zo melodisch en blijft in het midden van de mix, enkel één element zijnde van het immense klanktapijt. Er is ook een eenvoudige loop/sequence maar ook dit is enkel een deel van het complex geheel. Er komen dan ook nog de nodige bloops en bleeps bij en een orgelsolootje. Sommige onderdelen doen erg kosmisch aan, andere zijn niet te klasseren. Dan volgt de titeltrack. Zwakke grollende/machineklanken zitten laag in de mix en er komt een ritmische loop aan. Een mooie vette, maar natuurlijk unieke, solo komt en gaat als het ritme verder buldert. "Echoes from Stone Part 1" heeft een soort druppende sequence die tevoorschijn komt uit een golvende drone. Meer drones/tapijtjes komen eraan en een ritmelijn duikt op uit het duister. Het deed me denken aan een mengeling van allerlei psychedelische kleuren - laat de muziek zijn werk maar doen - waauw wat een trip!

"Excursion" begint met gekke winderige klanken en het breken van golven. Een twinkelende melodische loop komt erbij. Verschillende klankeffecten worden hier ten toon gespreid gaande van rommelende effecten tot robotklanken die de ritmische achtergrond verzorgen. Niet zo eenvoudig deze track, alsook "Ancient Island" niet. Het ritme doet een beetje 'tribal' aan. Hier rond spelen weer verschillende klanken maar het is moeilijk om hun onderlinge relatie te ontdekken. Het is ook moeilijk om een bepaald thema te ontdekken maar dat is misschien de bedoeling wel. Dit is misschien wel een totaal nieuwe luisterervaring. "Truth and Waiting" is toegankelijker. Een mooie melodielijn verschijnt uit een duistere achtergrond. Het is alsof we ons in een mooie tuin bevinden, de zon zorgt voor een regenboog boven een fontein. Een relaxerend ritme doet mijn hoofd lichtjes meeknikken.

Extra spanning komt van een sololijn, toch blijf ik relaxed. Zou het kunnen dat na een paar moeilijke nummers nu tijd wordt gegeven om wat te ontspannen? Een diep gezoem als van een grote motor zet "A Language for Shadows" op gang. Een echoënde puls, alsof er iemand uit de diepte van de aarde met een hamer slaat, trekt alle aandacht. Dit is een vrij donkere track die intenser wordt naarmate er meer klanken en effecten worden toegevoegd. Het is alsof we ons in een nachtmerrie bevinden waar we maar niet uitgeraken. Drie minuten voor het einde klaart het op met het aantreden van een verfrissende loop, die ons meeneemt tot op het einde. "Echoes from Stone Part 2" begint met een sequence die voortraast als een trein en met energetische drums. Plotseling kalmeert alles terug met rustgevende tapijtjes die zelfs enkele lijnen poëzie bevatten. Extreem doeltreffend, hier kan ik echt van genieten. "Reverse Alchemy" is een atmosferische afsluiter. Er zit wel wat ritme in maar dit is meer bedoeld om hier en daar wat detail te brengen. Vrij prettig en fascinerend.
