Keller & Schonwalder The Reason Why... Part 2 Play: Lo-Fi Mid-Fi Hi-Fi Download: Lo-Fi Mid-Fi Hi-Fi (Excerpt from track 'Da Capo') |
The concert has become legendary amongst Jodrell Bank regulars. Unfortunately this regular missed it, and I was left to lick my wounds with the magnificent 'the Reason Why...' CD. Relief turned to mild frustration when many of the attendees commented "the CD is great, but why did you leave out the best bits?" Well, I can now confirm that this particular comment is neither urban or a myth - as witnessed on 'Part Two' K&S scaled even greater heights than the original (fantastic) CD suggests.
It's worth clarifying that this CD is actually pieces from 3 concerts, the aforementioned JB appearance, plus a couple of earlier events. But it's primarily the 31 minute opener 'Da Capo' which will have everyone in raptures, whether you caught them at JB or not. It's the sequencing. It gnaws into the brain and quite simply doesn't leave you. The bass riff will be with you eternally. It builds purposefully, supplemented by percussion and extra layers. The subtle yet delightful synth motifs are almost overlooked as the rhythm dominates, but like a multi-faceted gem this is a track you will revisit many times to savour the full splendour.
Of course, for good measure K&S throw in an additional 40 minutes of high quality EM, first in the shape of 'Tanz der elfen', a rather smart, lilting, sequencer driven piece which spans the thick end of 20 minutes. Add the aptly titled 'Chill Out' to the equation and not only do you get quality with this CD, you also get quantity.
A word about the packaging - a totally blue jewel case, with silver titling - very clean and effective. But, this CD could have been wrapped in used chip paper for all I care. I'd have still added it to the collection. A truly essential slab of modern synthesis, borne from the mastery of live improvisation. (GG)
