This Volume brings the ’Rare Tracks’ story up to date with the years 2003 to 2010. ‘Prelude 2003’ gets underway with an urgent pulse, accompanied by sighing mellotron and questing lead. A thunderous sequence blast forward, really cranking up the excitement level, morphing superbly as it goes. I suppose much Berlin School style music harks back to TD’s Rubycon and this one conjures up that spirit more than most. Things calm down a little in the ninth minute, the sequences coming in gradually lessening waves until we float calmly on a sea of tranquil tron and tinkling, shimmering effects. All rather strange, brooding dream / nightmarish picture music. We return to soothing organ lead calm out of which a slow brooding sequence emerges. More sequences arrive and before you know it we are traveling at breakneck speed once more. What an opener! ‘Conserve The Preserve’ uses deep reverberating drones and windy sounds to set a rather spooky scene. Lush pads soar into the ether, synth flute dispelling the eeriness. A lovely little bubbling melody can be heard in the background. This is a gorgeous but also rather subtle track. I suppose it is hardly surprising with a title like ‘Sequential Explorers’ that said pulsating beasts are present from the very first second. After an initial swell they subside to form a pleasant hypnotic backing before starting gradually to assert themselves once more. Excellent little guitar licks courtesy of Mick Daniels (aka Hashtronaut) give proceedings that added bight but without completely letting rip. Yet another superb track. ‘Down Tempo’ takes us back to dark brooding realms with some seriously deep cosmic rumbles. This is the most ‘out there’ journey into the cosmos I have ever heard from Brendan. A slow pulse can be heard in the background under mournful swelling mellotrons (at least two of them I think). Simply gorgeous stuff. A sequence starts up just after the half way mark, getting my head nodding in time but without shattering the lovely mood so painstakingly created in the first half. Every track here would be a welcome addition to any Berlin School / Sequencer fans collection. DL
