This is the sort of album which wouldn't usually be reviewed within these pages but I am making an exception because firstly the standard of musicianship and composition is top notch but also because Bjorn's last album 'Colony' as well as CDs from his 'Divinorum' side project have all been big sellers for us. Bjorn has always had prog leanings however and on this album they are combined with some almost folk type elements giving it a very whimsical feeling.

It is also a highly emotional CD so good to listen to with the wife or girlfriend, even if she isn't into Electronic Music (as this really isn't an EM album). There might be a lot of tracks here but five of them are short minute long interludes, one of them starting the album off and is a combination of bird song and acoustic guitar. The first proper track is 'On the Morrow of Today' which combines some nice faintly Celtic drumming with a beautiful highly melodic dreamy lead line. It all then becomes very playful as we keep going into a rather folksy, dancy section between which more uplifting synth shines through. 'The Alchemist' begins with acoustic guitar and cello. The cello momentarily disappears and the guitar mixes with restrained percussion. When it returns the melody is picked up with plucked strings, this time combining with flute. It is mainly an acoustic track, the electronics providing faint colouring.

In the fourth minute proceedings are given added bight when an electric guitar soars over the top. 'A Life of Moments' combines acoustic guitar and flute together most tenderly, even romantically, turning into a bitter sweet mood later on. 'Under the Bard's Tree' has a medi evil feel; you can just imagine a minstrel group playing for Henry the eighth. As we go on it sounds more like a track from John Williams or Sky! 'Beneath the Surface' is suitably subterranean, water dripping from the roof of a cavern sounds combined with dark string pads. An acoustic guitar then plays a gentle melody over more soft melancholy strings. A piano lead backed by still more acoustic guitar gets 'The Ice Maiden' underway. Despite the title it actually seemed quite warm and playful to me. It's very relaxed and pleasant. 'Greenfields' and 'Spellcraft' are both piano dominated tracks, the latter with a delicate rhythmic backing and soft synth colouring, I swear there is even a sequence in there somewhere! 'The Camp on the Riverbank' uses running water under peaceful flute then a piano and pleasant electric guitar / acoustic guitar combination. 'The Meeting Place' initially has ethnic tinges both in rhythm and flute though more conventional western flute also mixes nicely with the whole.

It's a real nice one; got me air drumming to it. 'The Old Tower' had a wonderful piano / cello combination then harpsichord, reminding me a little of my wife's chamber group! The pace quickens and tabla type drums are added creating quite a different almost sinister mood. We soon return to piano, cello then flute however, all going together beautifully. We then get a moody strings section before the usual array of instruments return for the finish. Wonderful stuff! I would usual call 'Ripples' rather twee but basically being a very pleasing (and well played) piano solo it fits the mood of the album well. 'Mystery Forest' mixes acoustic guitar, synth pads and windy sounds with some very faint rhythm in the background then even a little harp. It's all rather serene. We finish with the title track. It uses the same palette of sounds / instruments as on the rest of the album but with the addition of a few more electronics. The overall feel is triumphant with optimistic lead lines and rather more of a punch. The track's running time is over ten minutes; the last two and a half however are pure nature sounds.

Let me sum it up this way, my five year old son wandered into the office and said 'Daddy, why are you listening to proper music?' His mother has far too much of an influence on him. The quality here can't be denied however. (DL)

Dit is niet het soort album dat we hier gewoonlijk bespreken, ik maak echter een uitzondering omdat dit muzikaal en compositorisch top vakmanschap is, maar ook omdat zijn vorige album 'Colony' en zijn 'Divinorum' project grote verkoopcijfers haalden bij ons.

Bjorn had altijd al progrock invloeden en deze keer worden deze zelfs gecombineerd met folk, wat een wat vreemde combinatie geeft. Dit is ook een hoogst emotionele CD, ideaal om met vrouw of vriendin te beluisteren, zelfs als zij niet van EM houden (want dat is het zeker niet). Er staan vele tracks op maar vijf hiervan zijn aanzetten tot andere nummers, zoals het eerste waarmee het album start, een combinatie van vogelgeluiden en akoestische gitaar. De eerste 'echte' track is "On the Morrow of Today" en combineert Keltische drums met een enorm mooie, hoge melodie, erg dromerig. Dit wordt erg speels als we verder gaan met een folkse, vrij dansbare sectie, met schitterende synthklanken.

"The Alchemist" begint met akoestische gitaar en cello. De cello verdwijnt dan tijdelijk en de gitaar wordt gemengd met ingehouden percussie. Wanneer de cello terugkeert wordt de melodie verzorgd door geplukte strings, deze keer in combinatie met fluit. Dit is grotendeels een akoestische track, het elektronisch gedeelte levert enkel wat verre kleur. In de vierde minuut komt er een elektrische gitaar bij. "A Life of Moments" combineert elektrische gitaar met fluit, allebei even teder, even romantisch, later een beetje bitterzoet. "Under the Bard's Tree" heeft een middeleeuws gevoel, je kan je zo inbeelden dat er een groep minnestrelen staat te spelen voor Henry VIII. Als we verder gaan lijkt het wel een nummer van John Williams of Sky!

"Beneath the Surface" klinkt vrij onderaards, water druipt van de zoldering van een grot over een achtergrond van triestige strings. Een piano met op de achtergrond nog meer akoestische gitaar brengt "The Ice Maiden" op gang. Desondanks de titel klinkt dit vrij warm en speels voor mij – ook prettig en releaxed. "Greenfields" en "Spellcraft" worden beide gedomineerd door de piano, de laatste met een delicate ritmische achtergrond en fijne synthklanken – ik zweer dat ik zelfs ergens een sequence hoor! "The Camp on the Riverbank" gebruikt stromend water en een vredige fluitmelodie, later een piano en een prettige elektrische/ akoestische gitaar combinatie. "The Meeting Place" heeft oorspronkelijk etnische trekjes, zowel in het ritme als in de fluitmelodie, doch wordt er verder ook een conventionele fluitmelodie in verwerkt – een geweldig geheel. Dit is zo mooi dat het me liet luchtdrummen. "The Old Tower" heeft een enorm mooie piano/ cello combinatie en later zelfs clavecimbel, wat me deed denken aan het kamermuziekgezelschap van mijn vrouw. De track wordt intenser en er komen tabla ritmes bij, die een totaal andere, bijna sinistere stemming teweeg brengen. Spoedig keren we terug naar de piano, cello en fluit en alles gaat wondermooi tezamen. Dan krijgen we een stemmige stringssectie, alvorens de gebruikte instrumenten terugkeren om te eindigen.

Wondermooi spul! Normaal zou ik "Ripples" nogal 'soft' noemen maar met zijn prettige (en erg goed vertolkte) pianomelodie past dit eigenlijk perfect binnen het album. "Mystery Forest" mengt akoestische gitaar, synth tapijtjes en winderige klanken, met enkele erg verre ritmes op de achtergrond, later zelfs met harp. Heel sereen allemaal. We eindigen met de titeltrack. Deze gebruikt hetzelfde klanken/ instrumentenpallet als op de rest van het album, doch met toevoeging van wat meer elektronica. Het gevoel is eerder triomferend met zijn optimistische en krachtige solo. De track duurt meer dan tien minuten waarvan de laatst tweeënhalf puur natuurklanken zijn.
