This is a concert recording from 2000 but I wouldn't have known it was live just by listening to it. As with many releases nowadays the tracks all run into one another. Tranquil pads, night insects and some metallic percussion as well as what sounds like the guitar mentioned in the title mingle together to form 'Guitar Harmonics'. Its a very peaceful number, the guitar eventually creating a lovely dreamy melody of sorts. Guitar tones swell, hang in the air then slowly fade into the ether. It has a slightly 'Eastern' and blissed out feel to it. The guitar disappears and we seamlessly drift into 'Nada'. Its another very peaceful number. The flute becomes the main instrument played in a nice deep almost sighing fashion. Again the term 'dreamy' comes to mind.

Its all so relaxing and peaceful. The flute only disappears as we continue our journey into 'Cloud Relapse' (the running time of this track is about nine minutes less than it states in the cover notes by the way). Now I'm not really sure what the main instrument is- could very well be synth but again has something of an 'Ethnic' (Egyptian?) feel. The flute returns for 'Lapis' along with ethnic sounding drums, percussion and rather strange animal sounds. The tempo really picks up and we get into quite a groove. The flute now shares lead duties with some deep string sounding instrument but again it could be synth. Actually the track is hardly Electronic sounding at all. The only obvious EM elements being some faint synth colouring in the background. Its much more tribal, a style of music that doesn't usually do much for me but in this case I really enjoyed it. 'Submission to Pele' begins with faint sounds of a jungle then some tinkling gong type noises. Another tribal rhythm starts up. This time its very slow and unobtrusive. Its a rather strange 'visual' number, more descriptive than music as such. Something of a strange one- not really my cup of tea.

'Synergistic Perceptions' sounds rather subterranean. Deep drones echo in the bowels of the Earth as water drips from the cavern roof high above. Spooky spectres float menacingly in the air. Its a great slab of dark ambience. 'Demilitarized Zone' initially continues the dark mood until more slow ethnic drumming enters. Ghostly noises return but the main appeal is some lovely spacey lead instrument, could even be the guitar again, which keeps coming and going played in an almost percussive sort of way. The version of the CD I am taking this review from has an extra track 'Winged Ants' and is a limited edition but I can't guarantee that the CD you buy will have this additional number. It is very short though and I would hardly call it essential. The track is fairly dominated by distorted vocal samples (played backwards?) and odd scraping sounds. Its more like a collage of noises and effects. Is it really music? A debate for another time perhaps. (DL)

Nederlandstalige versie

Dit is een concert opname uit 2000, maar enkel door er naar te luisteren had ik het niet geweten. Als met vele uitgaven tegenwoordig lopen alle tracks in elkaar over. Kalmerende drones, nachtelijke insecten, wat metaalklinkende percussie en iets wat klinkt als een gitaar, zoals vermeld in de titel "Guitar Harmonics", klinken door elkaar. Een heel vredig nummer, de gitaar creëert een droommelodie. De gitaarklanken zwellen eerst aan en faden dan zachtjes uit in de ruimte. Dit heeft een licht oosters gevoel. De gitaar valt weg en we drijven naar "Nada". Weer een heel rustig nummer. De fluit wordt het hoofdinstrument en speelt op een mooie diep, bijna zuchtende wijze.

Weer komt de term 'dromerig in me op. Het is allemaal zo relaxerend en vredig. De fluit verdwijnt enkel als we overgaan naar "Cloud Relapse" (de duur van deze track is 9 minuten korter dan vermeld wordt in het boekje). Ik ben er niet zeker van wat het hoofdinstrument is – het kan een synth zijn maar het heeft iets etnisch (Egyptisch?). De fluit komt terug op "Lapis" tezamen met etnisch getinte drums, percussie en rare dierlijke geluiden. Het tempo stijgt en we krijgen een soort groove. De fluit geeft een solo weg samen met een stringsklinkend iets – kan weer een synth zijn. De track klinkt eigenlijk weinig elektronisch, de enige EM elementen zijn wat synth toevoegingen op de achtergrond. Dit is meer tribal, een muziekstijl die me normaal niet zoveel doet maar van dit hield ik wel. "Submission to Pele" begint met verre klanken vanuit de jungle, alsook een soort hoge gongklanken. Een ander tribal ritme start, deze keer traag en bescheiden. Dit is een raar 'visueel' nummer, heel beschrijvend. Een héél raar nummer – niets voor mij.

"Synergistic Perceptions" klinkt vanuit het midden der aarde. Diepe drones echoën in de ondergrond van de aarde, water druipt van de hoge zoldering van de grot. Spookachtige effecten vliegen dreigend door de lucht. Dit is mooie donkere ambient. "Demilitarized Zone" houdt het donkere gevoel aan tot er etnische drums bijkomen. Terug wat spookachtige klanken maar de aantrekkingskracht zit hem hier in een zeer mooie spacey solo, zou ook weer de gitaar kunnen zijn, welke komt en gaat op een percussieve wijze. De versie van de CD die ik hier bespreek heeft een extra track "Winged Ants" en is een gelimiteerde versie, ik kan echter niet garanderen dat wij deze versie ook nog kunnen leveren. Deze track is erg kort en hij is zeker niet essentieel. Hij wordt gedomineerd door vervormde stemsamples (achterstevoren?) en vreemde schrapende klanken.
