The album runs in chronological order starting with two tracks from 2004. ‘Huizen One’ is a rather mellotron drenched atmospheric affair with the sound of water lapping against the shore. All rather relaxing and pleasant, reminding me a little of ‘Epsilon in Malaysian Pale’. The sequences blast forward for ‘Huizen Two’, an excellent bass line being a prominent feature. It is a real hundred mile an hour stormer which gets even more intense as a second sequence enters after the half way mark. ‘Lost Echoes’ takes us forward another couple of years but as with the previous track gets straight into the sequences. Even though they are rapid they stay low in the mix letting the mellotron lead line take centre stage, moody guitar licks adding to the excitement and especially near the end mixing with the synth lead very effectively. ‘Meeting of the Chameleon’ fast-forwards us another two years to 2008 and we are treated to the best sequence on the album so far. More sequences are brought into formation, ebbing and flowing in the mix as the intensity of the rather hypnotic music constantly moves up and down the scale. The rest of the tracks are from 2009, the next three featuring Hashtronaut as well as the ever present Brendan. Crashing effects then a rumbling sequence get ‘Clickatron’ to a rather intense start. Things then get even better as more sequences and excellent lead line are expertly deployed. Scything guitar increases the oomph level to even higher proportions. The synth lead responds, almost as if it is duelling with the guitar - wonderful stuff! Another awesome sequence gets ‘Singing Beast’ underway, moody guitar providing perfect contrast. It’s another winner. Unbelievably ‘960 Parameter’ shifts up yet another gear as a ballsy sequence makes the ground shake, morphing this way and that as it goes, the guitar flashing like a laser. Wow! ‘Amber Glow’ is in complete contrast to the previous six tracks as we get a rather tinkling cosmic setting. A sequence doesn’t arrive until the fourth minute, which in the context of this album is an age. Things then develop at quite a rate as a second sequence, fitting in perfectly with the first, creates a wall of blissful pulsations. The best album in the ‘Rare Tracks’ series so far. DL
