Constance Demby is well known for her extremely relaxing and beautiful music. Some even claim it has healing powers. It sometimes seems to have classical leanings and much of it sounds highly spiritual. Indeed the label itself describes it as 'Symphonic Space Music'. Much of the CD follows the parts of the Ordinary of the Mass though not necessarily in the traditional order.

Soft pads float from the speakers. They are soon joined by soprano vocal samples repeating the title of the track 'Alleluliah', a lovely lead line echoing the vocal. The next track 'Kyrie' also features vocal samples but this time they are decidedly Gregorian. Images of monks at worship readily come to mind. Eventually more mellow samples join the monks. The underlying pads swell almost triumphantly emphasising the highly spiritual nature of the music. A little plucked string melody can just be heard in the background, its delicate quality shining perfectly in such a setting. 'Sanctum' is a faintly classical offering with delicate use of vocal colouring. The Alleluliah sample returns for the next track 'Gloria'. Little brass touches add detail over massed strings as more choirs take the soul to a sort of blissed out Nirvana (OK so I'm mixing up religions- but you get the idea?). The mood doesn't change one jot with 'Pacem'. More little sublime plucked string melodies act like the rays of the sun shimmering the air on a hot lazy summer's day. The monks return on 'Veni Creato' as it heavily features some more excellent Gregorian chants over melancholy pads.

Make no mistake this is an incredibly beautiful album probably the most beautiful I have ever reviewed. Not for the typical SMD customer I would think but I know that there is a significant minority who like peaceful restful music and if this is your thing it really doesn't come much better. The liner notes sum it up perfectly 'Sannctum Sanctuorum takes you on an inward journey, turning your living space into a sanctuary of peace and serenity'. It does occur to me though that if you like this CD you should also try the 'real thing' as it were. Good places to start would be: 'Agnus Dei' by Barber; 'St Matthew Passion' by Bach; 'Miserere mei, Deus' by Allegri or 'In paradisum (Requiem)' by Faure. If however its the Gregorian chants you like the most search out 'Canto Gregoriano' on EMI Classics, if it is still in print. (DL)

Nederlandstalige versie

Constance Demby is bekend voor haar extreem relaxte en erg mooie muziek. Sommigen beweren zelfs dat deze helende krachten bezit. Soms leunt het wat aan tegen het klassieke en veel ervan klinkt erg spiritueel. Het label zelf beschrijft het als 'Symfonische Space Muziek'. Een gedeelte van de CD volgt de onderdelen van de Heilige Mis, zij het niet in de traditionele volgorde.

Zachte tapijtjes komen uit de luidsprekers en worden spoedig bijgestaan door sopraanstemmen die de titel van de eerste track herhalen, nl. "Alleluliah". Een mooie solo dubbelt deze woorden. De volgende track "Kyrie" gebruikt ook vocalen, deze keer duidelijk Gregoriaans. Beelden van biddende monniken komen onmiddellijk in me op. Meer zachte samples komen hier nog bij. De onderliggende paden zwellen triomfantelijk aan en benadrukken de spirituele aard van deze muziek. Een geplukte stringsmelodie is ook net hoorbaar en vormt een perfect geheel met het vorige. "Sanctum" heeft een vrij klassieke benadering en maakt gebruik van delicate stemmen. De 'Alleluliah'-sample komt terug in de volgende track "Gloria". Een beetje koperklanken geven wat detail over de massale strings en nog meer koren geven dit stuk een enorme diepte. Deze sfeer blijft hangen bij "Pacem". Een andere geplukte stringsmelodie geeft het gevoel alsof de zon de lucht doet trillen op een hete zomerse dag. De monniken keren terug op "Veni Creato" met nog meer uitstekende Gregoriaanse gezangen en melodische tapijtjes.

Dit is een erg mooi album, waarschijnlijk zelfs het mooiste wat ik ooit besproken heb. Niet echt voor de typische SMD-klant, maar ik weet dat er een minderheid is die van rustige, vredige muziek houdt en beter dan dit is moeilijk te vinden. In het boekje beschrijft men dit perfect: 'Sanctum Sanctuorum' neemt je mee op een innerlijke reis, je woonruimte omvormend tot een heiligdom van vrede en rust'. Als je hiervan houdt kan je ook de echte klassiekers misschien eens benaderen zoals: 'Agnus Dei' van Barber, 'Matheus Passie' van Bach, 'Miserere me, Deus' van Allegri of 'In Paradisum (Requiem) van Fauré. Als de Gregoriaanse gezangen je het meest bevallen, kijk dan eens uit naar 'Canto Gregoriano' op EMI Classics, als dit tenminste nog leverbaar is. (DL)
