This is the latest 'Library' disc which Ian has contributed tracks to. This time however he provides just over half the material the rest is shared between two other musicians. Howie who is OK if you like that sort of thing and the obviously very talented David Molyneux. All the tracks are short, between two and three minutes in length but most are highly commercial packing in loads of fantastic hooks and real cool rhythms. Its fun and highly enjoyable stuff. Of all the library discs we have sold through SMD so far this will probably have the widest appeal. Ian's first piece 'The Enigma' has one of the strongest melodies he has created since 'The Uncertainty Principle.

The rhythmic backing is completely undemanding but creating just the right sort of groove. There is also an excellent bass line underpinning everything. 'Digital Dream' on the other hand is a gentle Floater. 'Industrial' returns us to churning rhythmic territory the title saying it all as all sorts of machines, even steam trains come to mind. 'Info Flow' slows the pace again , notes cascading from the speakers over a slow shuffling rhythm, piano providing the main lead line. Its certainly nothing like Ian has come up with before and as with all the tracks here, a billion miles away from the sort of material he has released recently on the DiN label.

'Perpetual Motion' shows yet another side of Ian's work, gentle and yet purposeful with loads of little note runs and great melodies. Lovely stuff. I bet you will hear this one on TV programmes all over the place. My little lad said that 'Stasis' reminded him of under the sea. I know what he means. It does have a slow flowing feel to it with notes sounding like drops of water. 'Big Time' reminded him of monsters. Well its certainly strident with a big sound and I doubt you would want to mess with anything in the visuals that the music would accompany.

'Transglobal' is the strangest number here made up of a collage of 'communication' sounds (modems, telephone operators, mis-dial tones etc). 'Transmit' is a much more conventional slow chugger, rather relaxing but with a slight chilled dance edge. Howie's tracks on the other hand all seem to follow a similar formula. His first 'Engage' is a hundred mile an hour piece which is straight into snare drum type rhythms. We occasionally take a short break but if anything the track becomes even more urgent near the end. He also contributes the title track which is pretty much more of the same, as is 'Cyberbeat' and 'Event Horizon'. They aren't exactly subtle but with the first of these three he does at least introduce the odd piano doodle to give a slightly softer edge.

David Molyneux's initial contribution 'Future World' has really nice melodies over a foot tapping chugging backing. Its very infectious sporting the sort of tunes you could actually hum. 'Communicate' is a real blast- heavy beats with a slight dance leaning and again the lead lines are fantastic. He shows that he can also produce more relaxed numbers with 'Free Thinking'- a slow groover incorporating choral pads and flute sounds. 'Transition' is even more laid back and relaxing. 'Connecting' is based around a solid dance beat which is again spot on, I just couldn't keep my body still. If I could only find a 'proper' album by David Molyneux I think we could have made real discovery. (DL - Additional contribution HL)

Nederlandstalige versie

Dit is de nieuwste "librarydisc" met stukken van Ian Boddy. De muziek is maar voor de helft van hem en voor de rest van 2 andere muzikanten. Howie, die goede dingen doet als je daar van houdt en de blijkbaar zeer getalenteerde David Molyneux. Alle tracks zijn kort, tussen de 2 en 3 minuten, maar de meeste zitten propvol commerciële aantrekkingspunten en ritmes. Dit is prettig en aangenaam materiaal. Van alle "librarydiscs" die al bij SMD verkocht zijn heeft deze vast de grootste aantrekkingskracht. Ian's eerste stuk "The Enigma" heeft één van de sterkste melodieën sinds "The Uncertainty Principle". De ritmische achtergrond is niet veeleisend maar levert net de juiste groove. Er is ook een uitstekende baslijn die alles ondersteunt. "Digital Dream" is dan weer een kalm nummer. "Industrial" zit boordevol ritmes en zoals de titel het aangeeft gaat dit over allerlei machines, zelfs stoomtreinen komen in je op.

"Info Flow" is terug rustiger, de noten borrelen als het ware uit de luidsprekers, bijgestaan door een traag ritme en een piano die voor de sololijn zorgt. Zeker niet iets wat Ian al eens gedaan heeft en zoals alle tracks hier een kilometer verwijderd van zijn recente materiaal op het DIN label. "Perpetual Motion" laat een andere kant zien van Ian's werk, zacht en doeltreffend met veel melodie. Heel mooi. Ik wed dat je dit overal op TV gaat horen.Mijn jongste zei dat "Stasis" hem aan de zee deed denken en ik weet wat hij bedoelt, het voelt een beetje drijvend aan met zijn klanken als druppels water. "Big Time" deed hem dan weer aan monsters denken, voor de hand liggend met zo'n immense klanken. "Transglobal" is het vreemdste nummer en bevat allerlei communicatieklanken (modems, telefoonoperators, foute verbindingstonen, enz..). "Transmit" is vrij conventioneel, relaxed maar met een chill dance kantje.

Howie's tracks daarentegen schijnen allemaal volgens dezelfde formule gemaakt. Zijn eerste "Engage" is een stuk tegen 160 km/h met veel snare drums. Af en toe een korte adempauze maar tegen het eind nog sneller. Hij levert ook de titeltrack welke in dezelfde richting gaat, alsook "Cyberbeat" en "Event Horizon". Niet zo erg subtiel maar in de eerste van deze drie speelt hij ook een vreemde pianosolo die het einde toch wat zachter maakt.
