Driftin’ Thoughts are one of the artists I was particularly impressed with on the Spheric Music sampler. ‘Disguised Illusions’ was the track, and it is featured here at number 7. This piece has seen more outings on my CD player than most since I first heard it. It’s a completely infectious combination of sequences, dance beats and sublime melodies. The chord progressions in the mid section are the type of thing you dream about, and the way the different rhythmic patterns each contribute to the blend is masterful. It was an inspired choice for the sampler, and as yet none of the other tracks quite match this piece. However, that’s not to say that the other pieces are duffers - far from it. There are some really great tracks on this album, most angling more towards traditional EM than dance - having said that it’s the dance pieces which really stand out - ‘Serenity’ for example is another “pump up the volume” classic. Marcus Hildebrandt seems to have all the necessary skills at his disposal to make top notch EM. I’m still getting into the tracks, and many really are starting to shine through. I wish I had more space to cover this album. Try it! (GG)
