OK, the title pretty much sums it up but this isn't just Mark jumping on the 'retro' bandwagon. When an artist does that the results tend to be a weak interpretation of something they don't really feel. This album on the other hand really hits the spot and also serves up a few surprises / interesting ideas along the way. It is by far and away the best Mark Jenkins album I have ever heard. If you have tried his work before and it hasn't hit the spot don't let that put you off. If you are into sequencer / rhythm combinations with loads of melody then buy this without hesitation! 'The Stone' isn't a track as such just a vocoded introduction (very 'Cromium Echoes') from which a superb rapid sequence emerges as we get into 'A Gift of Darkness'.

A driving rhythm combines with the sequence. There is so much infectious energy here that you just have to let your body go with the pulsations. A purposeful flutey lead line bounces over the top, no meandering drift here and adds to the excitement still further. The lead then becomes razor sharp setting fire an already excellent track. 'The Slow Cooling of a Dying Sun' is a much more serene number beginning with a relaxed meandering piano lead line. In the background a sequence can be heard but it never surges forward. An acoustic guitar line is added to then replaces the piano taking us via a floating bridging section to the much more upbeat 'Weaponised Strain 11966'. A sequence starts to really motor and an electric guitar flashes over the top. Extra rhythm is added and becomes the dominant feature. Lead duties then return to the synths - lovely thick chunky sounds chosen. All in all its something of a stormer.

'Peace Machine' is another great track featuring steady rhythms and very nice melodies. 'The Ceremony of Innocence' takes you along on the back of rather quirky beats which become quite hypnotic until a restrained electric guitar lead demands your attention. With a couple of minutes to go the guitar has a bit of a flourish and is then replaced by one of the acoustic variety. 'I can Cause You to Join in the Rhythmic Dance' cranks up a rhythmic melodic loop over which flutey synth is played. Its irresistible stuff. I found my head nodding to the beats all the way through it. I could have done without the vocal sample at the end (based around the title) though. Its straight into the sequences on 'Moving Mirrors'. It gets even more syncopated as the track progresses. Lead line after lead line are brought in until we almost (but not quite) overdose on them. An incredible amount is crammed into the short five minute duration.

The first part of 'The Surge Cloud / Pyroclastic Flow' has a rather trippy psychedelic feel to it. Echoing pulses, organ and other lead sounds meshing together to take us to another dimension. It becomes rather rhythmic, fascinating though rather strange sounds looped in the middle of the mix. The second part if anything is even better than the first- guitars and little melodies giving it something of a euphoric feel. I loved it all- wonderful! 'Las Pampas de Mongolia' does have something of an Eastern influence in the melody department though the backing rhythms and sequences are much more conventional. I suppose it would be quite infectious if you like that sort of thing but it was not my favourite track here. 'Sweep the Stardust from the Sky' is an appealing energetic little track, a really nice sequence mixing with a dance beat. It very much hits a groove and goes for it. The main lead melody has something of a Turkish feel but it all sounded very tongue in cheek to me- irresistible. It certainly brought a smile to my face. This CD is full of no nonsense fun - not a pretentious note in it. I liked it very much indeed. (DL)

Nederlandstalige versie

Ok, de titel vertelt het al, dit is een sequencer album maar Mark springt niet op de kar van de typische retrostijl. Wanneer een artiest zoiets doet is het resultaat soms maar een zwakke interpretatie van wat hij werkelijk voelt. Daarentegen zit het album goed en biedt het enkele verrassende/interessante ideeën. Dit is zeker het beste Mark Jenkins album dat ik al hoorde. Als je zijn vorige werken niet zo goed vond moet je dit misschien toch eens beluisteren. Als je houdt van sequence/ritme combinaties met veel goede melodieën, kan je dit zonder twijfel aankopen!

"The Stone" is niet werkelijk een track maar enkel een vocoder introductie (heel 'Cromium Echoes') van waaruit een snelle sequence ontstaat en zo overgaat in "A Gift of Darkness". Een stuwend ritme wordt met de sequence gecombineerd. Hier zit zoveel aanstekelijke energie in dat je gewoon je lichaam laat gaan op het ritme. Een doelgerichte fluitachtige solo wordt hierover gelegd en geeft nog meer opwinding. De solo wordt messcherp en zet vuur in deze toch al geweldige track. "The Slow Cooling of a Dying Sun" is een kalmer nummer dat begint met een ontspannende pianolijn. Op de achtergrond is er een sequence te horen doch deze komt nooit naar voren. Hierbij komt nog een akoestische gitaarlijn die de piano vervangt en ons dan drijvend meeneemt naar een sneller stuk "Weaponised Train 11966". Het begint met een sequence en een elektrische gitaar. Extra ritme komt dominant naar voren. Dit is een erg goed nummer.

"Peace Machine" gaat er ook in als zoete koek met een gelijkmatig ritme en een zeer goede melodie. "The Ceremony of Innocence" neemt je mee met vreemde beats die heel hypnotisch worden tot een elektrische gitaar al je aandacht vraagt. Bijna op het einde wordt de gitaar vervangen door één van het akoestische type. "I can cause you to join in the Rhythmic Dance" is een ritmische melodische loop waarover een synth fluit bespeeld wordt. Onweerstaanbaar - Ik kon mijn hoofd niet stilhouden. Voor mij mocht het ook wel zonder de vocale samples op het einde (gebaseerd op de titel).

Recht in de sequences met "Moving Mirrors". Dit wordt complexer naarmate de track evolueert. Solo na solo tot we bijna (maar niet helemaal) een overdosis krijgen. Een ongelooflijke hoeveelheid wordt hier bijeen gepropt op deze korte 5 minuten. Het eerste gedeelte van "The Surge Cloud/Pyroclastic Flow" heeft een psychedelisch kantje. Echoënde klanken, orgel en andere soloklanken mengen zich tezamen om ons mee te nemen naar een andere dimensie. Dan wordt het vrij ritmisch met fascinerende maar vreemde geloopte klanken in het midden van de mix. Het tweede gedeelte is zelfs nog beter dan het eerste - gitaren en kleine melodietjes geven je echt een euforisch gevoel. Hier houd ik van - ongelooflijk!
