Jonn Serrie

Well this is a surprise, on two fronts. Firstly I thought all we would be hearing from Jonn Serrie in future would be the romantic style
he has been concentrating on recently, and secondly for once Miramar’s sleeve notes are actually accurate in that they say it
combines “Space Music with Native American tribal music”.
On the surface that might sound similar to Steve Roach but what we have here is really very different. The rhythms are not that
ethnic even though the melodies, particularly those played on flute do sound the part. The music Jonn presents here is also much
more accessible than much of Steve Roach’s tribal material. This could be due to Jonn taking Native American culture as his
influence where as Steve takes Native Australian.
The underlying synths are very ‘Planetary Chronicles’ providing a relaxed setting for the beautifully evocative melodies. Note I said beautiful
and not romantic. The tracks ‘Vision Quest’ ‘Great Plains’ and ‘Morning Song’ carry the greatest melody and therefore come over as the most
tribal but the other seven are rather cosmic. So, a very different album for Jonn Serrie and for me the best since ‘Planetary Chronicles Vol 2’.
