'Part 1' is initially a great piece of picture music. Slow rolling pads made me think of thick clouds moving rapidly on the wind blotting out the sun. At just under two minutes a sequence enters accompanied by a rhythm and lovely though slightly melancholy lead line. Its the sort of number which would really get your foot down on the accelerator. Cobwebs well and truly blown away things calm down and we drift into 'Part II'. We continue in a state of float supported be ever swirling pads. A sort of tension is built up, excitement being created without the use of rhythms or sequence. A repeated motif hints at something brewing and increases the tension still further. Its like a gathering storm and we are waiting for it to burst overhead but it never does.
The drones become more undulating and metallic sounding in 'Part III'. There is even the introduction of what sounds like things being blown against each other in the wind. This piece ends with strange cosmic sounds and things become rather tranquil as 'Part IV' takes over. A rather sad sounding melody starts to form but it doesn't stay around too long before we enter another space music section full of twitters, bleeps and effects. For the most part we have now had about 25 minutes of almost continuous highly expressive atmospheric drift but this is suddenly interrupted as another sequence starts up. At first its rather hypnotic but then starts to incorporate waves of increased intensity. It then disappears amongst a mish mash of distorted samples and other effects that sound as if they are from a fitful dream.
'Part V' introduced a deep rumbling throb around which another sequence forms. Its all rather 'Berlin School' both in structure and the sounds chosen. A dreamy lead line meanders over the sequence and sets a pattern which continues until the end. The last track has a drum loop as the main focus supported by various effects until we enter the final section containing yet more highly descriptive atmospheric music. (DL)
