Kistenmacher & Grosskopf
Stadtgarten Live
As with Kistenmacher's 'Starting Again' CDROM (reviewed in issue 1) the first track holds the multimedia presentation and there are two normal music tracks. The same software loaded from 'Starting Again' will handle this CD so there's no need to reinstall it (have a German phrase book handy if you do!). Again the presentation is interesting and well thought out. I feel that not having access to a PC/CDROM drive should not preclude the purchase of any of these CDs, but you do lose out in the value-for-money stakes. The music was recorded during a concert on January 19th 1991, and the 39½ minute 'Nightsounds Part 1' opens in very promising fashion with classic effects, doomy synth sweeps and resonating chords which build anticipation well. Drums and sequences develop from 11 minutes onwards and rhythmic changes are made to inject variety into the music, but overall the piece is rather strained and directionless. 'Different Feelings' has a relatively short 13½ minutes to retrieve the situation and although it's not that bad, it's not that good either with some average rhythmic passages accompanied by some average soloing. If you are a particular Kistenmacher / Grosskopf fan then you will probably want to add this to your collection anyway. If not, then the only real merit here goes to the multimedia side of things. Without that I wouldn't give this CD much consideration. (GG)
