Bob Holroyd
Stages
Bob Holroyd presents here a musical portrayal of life, God, death, and all the stages in between. Allah and Islam are used as the religious angle, and consequently on some of the tracks you will be confronted with Arabic wailing which sometimes complements, sometimes distracts, but hey - we're in concept territory here. Musically though there are gems aplenty, all polished with Bob Holroyd's individual style. 'Preying Mantra' is a sublime piece of gossamer delicacy, with a slowly undulating sequence drifting past various samples and synth touches. The title track contains more superb transient elements and is almost a cross between Jarre's 'Waiting for Cousteau' and Vangelis' 'Blade Runner'. 'Gondwana' is a subtle blend of rhythm, superb melodics and sympathetic samples while 'A brief Daydream' is an all too short piano piece of pure beauty which leads into 'Flight' - another wonderful example of "less is more" with a delightful atmosphere. You can place any slant you like on this album—enlightenment, meditation, relaxation, etc—and it will not be found wanting. It's within the music though that you will find the real strength. Highly Recommended. (GG)
