Protogonos
Strange Geographie
Ltd Edition 1000 copies. Lonesome synth drones and cosmic effects start this floating ambient album. The atmosphere created is very peaceful and rather pastoral bringing up images of looking over vast plains early in the morning through clear skies, seeing many miles into the distance. To other people it might send the mind floating from one solar system to another, it all really depends on the mood you are in whilst listening to it. As the track develops though the space effects become much more prominent. Shock waves, solar flares and strange shimmering apparitions abound.

At around ten minutes things become calmer as if we have entered some sort of dream state, becoming more and more tranquil until the end of the track. The second track takes over pretty much where the first left off with more cosmic effects and even a warning siren as if heard from a great distance. Very faint voices can just be heard amongst the sonic gloop adding the the dream like quality of the piece. We get a moment of peace but then a great wall of sound descends like an avalanche followed by massed “twitters” of cosmic energy. Metallic sounding pads are interspersed by yet more walls of sound. Great rumbles as if they are explosions from a nearby star engulf a delicate sequence which is low in the mix.

The third and last track is also by far the longest at almost half an hour. The style is similar to what has gone before. It initially reminded me of vast caves. Some of the notes drip one after the other as if water is falling from some stone roof far above and splashing on the subterranean floor. The ground then opens up beneath you and the sounds of strange machinery rise from far below. These images are then dissipated by gentle washes of sound which build in intensity to form resonating synth drones, very relaxing stuff. We now return to the shaft with the machinery except this time the sounds emanating from the depths are more aggressive, as if whatever is happening down there is degenerating into chaos. Calm again descends but more siren type noises can still be heard. Everything now becomes rather abstract, all sorts of noises and bubbling effects competing with each other for supremacy.

This really is immense space music, never staying still for a moment and for the most part rather dark. Not a rhythm or melody in site, just great slabs of intense atmospherics. (DL)
