Michael Stearns The Storm

Half the tracks are from various films Michael has composed for but I think that they are previously unreleased on CD. Of the others four were only previously available on 'The Light in the Trees' limited edition mini CD; one track came from the deleted 'Lektronic Soundscapes Vol 2' compilation and one, from what I can make out, has its debut here. So it is possible that die hard Stearns fans might have some of these tracks but most people won't. First up is the title track and surprise surprise the sound of a storm can be heard, at first faintly as if in the distance then closer to hand. Plucked stings, probably guitar, initially act like percussion but then develop into a beautifully melodic lead line.

'The Dream' is a very short piece, floating flute sounds calming the soul. 'The Gathering' on the other hand seems to have a little more menace to it. Intense windy type drones build to quite a cacophony. The shrill sounds of birds add to the feeling that all is not well. 'Hantu (ghost or spirit)' sounds as if we are in a dark dripping cave, a flute acting like a gentle breeze. The overall feeling is one of peacefulness but nearer the end it becomes more percussive and somewhat strident. 'Distant Train, Distant Thunder' is the one track which appears to be have its first outing in this project. The thunder element was obvious enough but I couldn't really hear the train. Whatever, the mood was once again fairly dark and the combination of sounds chosen certainly made for an uneasy atmosphere. 'The Path Between' wasn't really my sort of thing but if you are into ethnic percussion and flute playing you might like it. 'Cenote' is another atmospheric percussive piece mixed with night time insect sounds.

'The Light in the Trees' uses some incredibly deep bass rumbles which disappear to be replaced by gentle ethereal pads. Again birdsong can be heard in the background- its rather beautiful but relaxing at the same time- my favourite track on the CD. 'From the Cradle' mixes tinkling bell sounds, swelling pads and very faint vocal samples in a rather appealing way. Its certainly very descriptive. 'The Last Feeling' is another ethnic sounding number in the flute and percussion departments. These elements mix together fairly successfully with more conventional melodic Western synths. 'Surrender' features strummed guitar and was rather enjoyable, I just wish it could have gone on somewhat longer. Finally 'Bajan' combined shimmering synth tones and ethnic tabla type drumming with female Indian singing. I am sure it is very good - for what it is but I can imagine what 99% of SMD customers will think of it. (DL)

Nederlandstalige versie

De helft van de tracks zijn door Michael voor films gecomponeerd maar ik denk dat ze nog nooit op CD verschenen zijn. Van de andere tracks zijn er al vier eerder verschenen op 'The Light in the Trees', een gelimiteerde mini-cd, één op de niet meer verkrijgbare 'Lectronic Soundscapes Vol 2' compilatie en één track, denk ik, heeft hier zijn debuut. Dus voor de 'die-hard' fans van Michael is het mogelijk dat ze hier al wat materiaal van hebben, maar de meesten onder ons dus niet.

Eerst de titeltrack en wat een verrassing: we horen het geluid van de donder, eerst ver weg maar het komt dichterbij. Geplukte strings, waarschijnlijk gitaar, gedragen zich eerst percussief maar vormen zich dan om tot een mooie melodielijn. "The Dream" is een erg kort stuk, drijvende fluitklanken kalmeren de geest. "The Gathering" is daarentegen wat meer dreigend. Intense winderige drones bouwen zich op tot een redelijke kakofonie. Het schelle geluid van vogels laat je voelen dat er iets mis is. "Hantu" (geest of spook) klinkt alsof we ons in een druipende grot bevinden, een fluit speelt hierbij de rol van een zachte bries. Het gevoel is er één van kalmte maar tegen het einde wordt het percussiever en feller.

"Distant Train, Distant Thunder" is de track die volledig nieuw is. Het dondergehalte is erg duidelijk, de trein heb ik gemist. Het gevoel is vrij donker en de combinatie van klanken geven een ongemakkelijk gevoel. "The Path Between" is niks voor mij maar als je houdt van etnische percussie en fluitmelodieën dan hou je hier misschien wel van. "Cenote" is nog een atmosferisch/percussief stuk, gemixed met nachtelijke insectengeluiden.
