'Toulin- Spirit of the Earth' begins with vast breathing sounds, the exhalation being more like the crashing of some great wave. A percussive loop is added to it and then a rhythm, their combined sound being like some large chugging hissing machine. I found my head nodding in time to the beat. Another rhythm this time of the dance variety is also deployed giving a sort of edgy excitement to the number. A vocal sample can be heard low in the mix repeating most of the track title. Other faintly vocal sounding 'windy' pads are introduced as the rhythm becomes even faster.

Sci fi type vocal samples come and go whilst things become even more syncopated. A nice melodic though rather mysterious sounding lead line comes in. Its all rather commercial and fun. In the tenth minute we get a short relaxed interlude with floating electric guitar and wave type sounds but it isn't long before the chugging rhythm starts to make itself heard again and we revert to the infectious groove of before. There is another break of sorts five minutes later, a bass beat continues but in the background are all sorts of spooky / menacing effects and maybe one use too many of the 'Spirit of the Earth' sample. From this point things are stripped down a little though sounding just as powerful as before. With three minutes to go we revert to similar atmospherics which we momentarily were exposed to in the tenth minute and very relaxing it is too. 'A Meditation on Modern Philosophy' starts with a thoughtful spoken passage about Cyber Brains.

Dark deep space drones hang in the air punctuated by various cosmic effects. Its perfect music to relax to, sit back and let your mind wander. Just before the half way mark a faint cyber tribal rhythm just begins to make itself heard. It gradually increases in prominence adding extra interest but without ever rising above the middle of the mix thus the tranquil feel of the track is maintained. 'Mindlab' originally sounds as if we are in an underground system with trains thundering by. There are then some beautiful melodic pads. An infectious dance beat starts up which is soon accompanied by wordless female vocals. Its all extremely pleasant and very easy to get on with. The energy is cranked up as the track progresses but never gets out of hand. Its a cracking piece.

'Night Time Pleasures' is a short track featuring more cyber tribal type drumming over strange metallic drones. Deep distorted talking is added giving something of a sinister edge. Its an interesting track but rather odd compared to the rest of the album which is an undemanding though extremely enjoyable listen. (DL)

"Toulin – Spirit of the Earth" begint met omvangrijke 'ademende' klanken, de uitademing meer lijkend op het botsen van een ontzaglijke golf. Er komt een percussieve loop bij en een ritme, hun combinatie doet denken aan een grote puffende machine. Mijn hoofd knikte mee op de beat. Er komt nog een dance ritme bij en dit geeft extra opwinding aan dit nummer. Laag in de mix wordt er een stemsample gehoord die grotendeels de titel herhaalt. Ver weg ook andere winderige vocale samples en het ritme wordt sneller. Sci-fi stemsamples komen en gaan terwijl ze tegen elkaar in werken. Dan komt er een mooie maar mysterieuze solo bij. Heel commercieel en prettig.

Rond de tiende minuut kunnen we even relaxen met een drijvende elektrische gitaar en lange golvende klanken, maar het duurt niet lang alvorens het puffende ritme terug van zich laat horen en we terugvallen op de aanstekelijke beat van daarvoor. Vijf minuten later hebben we terug een rust, een bas beat houdt aan maar op de achtergrond horen we allerlei spookachtige, bedreigende effecten en misschien een beetje teveel van de 'Spirit of the Earth'-sample. Van hieruit wordt alles wat afgebouwd maar het blijft krachtig klinken. Nog drie minuten te gaan en we keren terug naar eenzelfde atmosfeer van rond de tiende minuut – heel relaxerend. "A Meditation on Modern Philosophy" begint met een doordachte, gesproken passage over 'Cyber Brains'.

Diepe donkere space-drones vullen de lucht, bijgekleurd door verschillende kosmische effecten. Perfecte muziek om te relaxen, achterover te gaan hangen en je gedachten weg te laten glijden. Rond de helft verschijnt er een zacht cyber-tribal ritme – nauwelijks hoorbaar, dan luider, maar nooit zo luid dat het de rust van deze track verstoort. "Mindlab" klinkt oorspronkelijk alsof we ons in een ondergronds treinstation bevinden. Dan komen er enkele mooie melodische klanken. Een aanstekelijke dance beat gaat van start en deze wordt spoedig vergezeld door woordloze vrouwenstemmen. Heel erg leuk en erg toegankelijk. Naarmate de track vordert stijgt het energiepeil maar het loopt nooit uit de hand. Een ultrasnel nummer. "Night Time Pleasures" is een korte track met nog meer cyber-tribal ritmes en rare metaalklinkende drones.
