Zero Ohms
True Degrees of Freedom
CD / 7 tracks / 57.57 mins

Zero Ohms lives up to his name in this particularly minimal work, seven deep journeys into abstract dark drones and ambient crowd noise. Recorded ambient noise from traffic, crowds, airports, and NASA add fascinating depth to the various flutes, wind-synths, percussion, other treatments. "The Road" is dark swirling sounds, barely audible for most of it. "The Spaceport" is somewhat brighter, consisting only of wind-synth and airport ambience.

The drones become rich and resonant, though at times they drop out to let only the noise of passersby remain. "The Gate" is 11 minutes of one long drone with people talking in the background. Sound boring? It's not, it's cool. "The Inner Mission" is a bit lighter, very soft. The NASA samples are folded in seamlessly, not discernible from the wind-synth. "The Flight" has a few more layers, but is still minimalist in approach. A reverse-tape bowl of flute loops gives a trippy feel to it. "The Afterglow" is dark and rumbling in parts, nearly silent in others. Quieter still is the closing track, "The Overlook," featuring a variety of primitive instruments though it still sounds very much like a journey into deep space. Heady intoxicating stuff for fans of true ambience. (PD)
