Described on the sleeve as "a combination of the synthesiser music of the 70's and the 80's", this album will, unsurprisingly, appeal to Tangerine Dream fans of that era. Well, perhaps more so the 80's because the main feature of this album is the melodic accessibility. This is not expansive, sequenced mood music - this is a collection of a dozen highly thematic tracks woven together to form a seamless concept. And it's not only TD fans which will find something to appeal on this disc, Jarre and Vangelis traits can also be heard.

Of the dozen tracks, roughly half seem to be short atmospheric preludes to the longer pieces which vary between 4 and 7 minutes. 'Dawn's Mist' effectively introduces the 7 minute 'Lonely Wolf'. Some may initially find this a bit lightweight but it is a grower and is nothing less than enjoyable - there is much more to come however. 'Northern Lights' is an effective short pastiche which gives way to the Vangelis influenced 'Rainbow' which features a chugging beat and jaunty melodics which build in typical V Man fashion to a crescendo. 'Stonehenge' opens with delicious rasping synth refrains before a workmanlike sequence gets to work accompanied by the main theme which does not disappoint, but again it doesn't really set the world on fire.

As the album progresses it gets stronger. 'Ocean Currents' features strong melodics and the best sequencing so far, and it's approach is a little more robust giving it an edge which is perhaps lacking in other pieces. 'Daylight Stars' presents by far the best atmos so far, but then a change of pace into 'Flare' which initially combines guitar and flute in expert fashion. A sequence backbone appears at roughly the mid point, and this really is classic TD style - for me the high spot of the album so far as it careers into a heavily 'Poland' influenced sequence frenzy resplendent with pounding drum percussion and massive synth chords. You can almost feel the sub zero temperatures. From TD we move to Jarre, 'Equinox' period synthesis as 'Elementary forces' kicks in with upbeat rhythmics and melody. My only slight complaint is the slightly cheesy drum sounds - but these get progressively drowned as the track progresses. The final two pieces really do leave the album on a high note. The two-and-a-half minute title track presents epic atmospherics with a brooding edge, while 'Rebirth' presents a fantastic combination of powerful sequencing and sumptuous melodics. On paper this album should be massive - melodic sequenced EM in the 80's TD / Jarre / Vangelis mould is hugely popular - and listening to the final track 'Rebirth' and track 9 'Flare' you can't imagine this album being anything less than a classic. But, too many times the album plays safe and is just too lightweight for this listeners liking. (GG)

Op het hoesje staat vermeld 'a combination of the synthesizer music of the 70's and 80's' en dit zal, tegen alle verrassingen in, TD fans van dit tijdperk aantrekken. Misschien is het meer van de 80-er jaren, de hoofdmoot van dit album is zeer melodisch toegankelijk. Dit is geen wijdse sequence muziek, eerder een collectie van een twaalftal tracks, rond elkaar geweven tot een naadloos concept. En niet enkel TD fans zullen hier hun gading vinden, ook Jarre en Vangelis fans. De helft van de tracks zijn atmosferische inleidingen tot de langere stukken. "Dawn's Mist" leidt het 7 minuten durende "Lonely Wolf" in. Sommigen zullen dit wat aan de lichte kant vinden, toch is het vrij aangenaam. "Northern Light" is een kort maar doeltreffend aperitiefje dat de weg open maakt voor het op Vangelis geïnspireerde "Rainbow", met een ronkende beat en een kwieke melodie.

"Stonehenge" opent met een uitstekende synthmelodie alvorens een sequence eraan komt, vergezeld door het hoofdthema. Het stelt niet teleur maar voor mij is het geen topper. Het album wordt sterker naarmate het verdergaat. "Ocean Currents" heeft sterke melodieën en de beste sequence tot nu toe, de benadering is veel robuuster en dit geeft het sterke kant die soms wat gemist werd bij vorige nummers. "Daylight Stars" geeft de beste atmosfeer tot nu toe en met een tempoverandering gaan we naar "Flare", met een deskundige gitaar/fluit combinatie. Rond de helft horen we een sequence op de achtergrond, helemaal klassieke TD stijl, voor mij het hoogtepunt van dit album. Het klinkt wat 'Poland' geïnspireerd maar dan met een beukend ritme en massieve synth akkoorden.
