There is a regular series of Electronic Music concerts in the States called 'The Gathering'. What we have here is a selection of tracks taken from events between 1996 and 1997. The album has been mastered so that all the tracks flow one from the other as a seamless whole.

Its an interesting idea and done very well despite the fact that there are quite a few styles on show. Some of the numbers are live versions of titles from studio albums where as others have never seen the light of day before in any version. 'While the Rest of the World Sleeps' by The Ministry of Inside Things is the first track on show and will probably be the favourite for most SMD customers as it features some lovely thick moody sequences over nice atmospherics and rather floating but highly effective lead lines. It all rather reminded me of TD's 'Sorcerer'. 'Astral Unraveller' by Bionaut is much more of a conventional US style floating ambient number with little synth detail and percussion added here and there to keep the interest.

'Chemistry of 7' by Ben Neill begins with rapid high register swirling sequences creating quite a psychedelic effect then a vaguely Eastern lead line (a bit Steve Jolliffe like actually) becomes the main focus. Not sure if it is played on some sort of Electronic Wind Instrument or something more conventional. Drum flourishes are added and these develop into an extremely satisfying groove though its still the lead, sounding more brass like all the time, which has the main impact. Steve Roach takes over with 'New Planet Passage'. Initially its all rather floating but then a tribal type rhythm starts up. The whole thing becomes more intense, the pads swell massively and the drums become extremely hypnotic. It's easy to get lost in the vast rhythmic loop.

Things become somewhat calmer just before the seven minute mark and a different more relaxed rhythm takes over. We finish with thunder, drifting into 'Mosaic' by Robert Rich. The music is so quiet it can hardly be heard. Little bell type chimes rise from the near silence. In the sixth minute an excellent tinkling sequence starts up, spectres wailing over the top. Three minutes later more subtle rhythm is added. It all goes together to form a wonderful track, a highlight of the CD.

Silly title time next. 'GDS1? Ask Larissa, she knows' by Kevin Bartlett begins with moody pads. A slow rhythmic motif is repeated from time to time, sort of nestling in with the atmospherics. An acoustic guitar then starts up sometimes adding subtle melody but at other times it is used more percussively. The overall feel is of tranquil relaxation. 'Vocal Overlay' by Jeff Greinke is a bit of a mystery as to why it was included. It is the only track not recorded at a Gathering and comes from 1994, a couple of years earlier than the others. The main feature is a processed vocal drone which moves in and out of sometimes ethereal, sometimes dark deep space pads. It wasn't really my sort of thing but the rest of the backing was excellent. Other little wordless vocal colouring is provided here and there and that also works well. Long may the Gatherings continue. (DL)

In de US is er een regelmatige reeks concerten genaamd 'The Gathering'. Wat we hier hebben is een keuze van nummers uit concerten van 1996 en 1997. Het album is zodanig gemastered dat alle nummers in elkaar overvloeien tot één groot geheel. Een interessant idee en erg goed gedaan, desondanks het feit er verschillende stijlen op voorkomen.

Sommige stukken zijn live versies van muziek die ook al op studio cd's verschenen is, andere hebben nog nooit het daglicht gezien. "While the rest of the world sleeps" van Ministry of Inside Things is de eerste track en waarschijnlijk ook direct de favoriet van de SMD klanten, met zijn vette sequences, mooie atmosferen en vrij zwevende maar erg effectieve solo's. Het deed me denken aan 'Sorcerer' van TD. "Astral Unraveller" van Bionaut is meer van de conventionele US stijl, een zwevend ambient nummer met weinig synth details en hier en daar wat percussie om de aandacht te houden.

"Chemistry of 7" door Ben Neill begint met een hoge draaiende sequence die een bepaald psychedelisch effect teweeg brengt, dan komt er nog een Oosters klinkende solo bij (een beetje als Steve Joliffe). Er komen nog wat drums bij en deze evolueren naar een vrij aanstekelijke groove, doch het blijft de solo, nu nog meer koper klinkend dan daarvoor, die de aandacht blijft trekken. Steve Roach neemt het nu over met "New Planet Passage". Aanvankelijk heel zwevend, tot er dan een tribal ritme bijkomt. Alles wordt intenser, de paden zwellen massief aan en de drums worden erg hypnotiserend. In deze loop kan je jezelf verliezen. Dan wordt het terug wat rustiger en een meer relaxed ritme neemt over. We eindigen met donder als we naar "Mosaic" gaan van Robert Rich. Deze muziek is zo stil dat hij amper gehoord wordt. Kleine belletjes komen tevoorschijn en rond de zesde minuut komt er nog een uitstekende twinkelende sequence bij, met een erg rijk spectrum. Drie minuten later komt er nog een subtiel ritme bij. Alles bij elkaar vormt dit een wondermooi nummer, een hoogtepunt van deze CD.

De volgende heeft een gekke titel "CDS1? Ask Larissa, she knows", door Kevin Bartlett en begint met aangename tapijtjes. Een traag ritmisch motiefje wordt van tijd tot tijd herhaald, zich blijkbaar nestelend in de atmosfeer. Dan volgt er een akoestische gitaar die een mooie melodie tevoorschijn tovert, soms wat percussief klinkend. Het gevoel is er één van ontspanning. "Vocal Overlay" door Jeff Greinke is een beetje een mysterie, waarom zit dit erbij? Het is de enige track die niet van The Gathering afkomstig is en hij komt uit 1994. Het bestaat vooral uit een vocale drone die in - en uitgaat, tezamen met soms etnische, soms donkere space tapijten.
