Michael Stearns
Collected Thematic Works
|
Both compilations are gleaned from various Michael Stearns albums between 1977 and 1987. Both are well packaged and despite much of the source material being analogue 4 track production is surprisingly clean.
'Collected Ambient and Textural Works' utilises such instruments as guitars, organ, electronic harp, echo loops and synths. Voice also features though sometimes its wailing nature does detract from the pleasing effect the other sounds are creating. Despite this, fans of minimalistic / monotonal / deep space / atmospheric / free floating soundscapes will be delighted with what's server up here. Lights off, adopt the lotus, and you're set. If you prefer a few melodies to latch onto then 'Thematic Works' is the one for you, though don't expect "in yer face" leads. Instrument wise the Serge Modular and Oberheim digital/analogue hybrids produce some lush sounds. There are one or two pieces which demand a prod of the skip button, but with 17 tracks available there's plenty to explore and enjoy. Tomita fans will certainly like the track 'Almost Daybreak', and between them these albums serve up much to admire. (GG)
