Tranceport
This Far

At last on CD we have one of this band's finest albums. This is the album preceding their Surreal to Real CD ‘Tranceglobal’ and is of the same calibre. ‘Strange Attractor’ has a cool jazzy style, well played with voice samples adding to the effect well. Suddenly sequences start and a tasty moog-like synth line leads the way to Tranceport in captivating rhythmic mode. Keeping in this mode we have ‘I Will Never Die’ which is a beefier number with all sorts of multi-sequences. ‘A Moment Lost’ slows things down with acoustic guitar and spacey synths. Don't fear, those sequences are soon here and another punchy and quite rocky track develops.

‘Something Wonderful’ lives up to it's title, here sounding rawer than the updated version (and better) on ‘Further’. 2001 samples from the film are combined well to enthralling music. ‘Storming Heaven’ is split into 4 parts, the last one is particularly good having a tuneful symphonic style, quite different from their usual style. ‘Pushing the Envelope’ is another track displaying those intoxicating multi-sequences, perhaps a bit more variation is warranted though. ‘The Journeyman (Long Walk)’ concludes things. You may well know this track from the Surreal to Real sampler CD ‘Surreality’, here it's in full length. I expect many will recognise the Star Trek episode the samples are taken from. Brilliant melodic/rhythmic music with an end section that's something special. Haunting lead synth lines all over the place - a marvellous climax.

This is a consistently good album and as you may have guessed is rhythm dominated throughout. I think close comparisons would be Rudolf Hiemann & Brainwork. (Trevor Newman)
