A combination of deep drum and percussive effects initially stand alone before some very delicate washes of sound can be heard underneath. These become more prominent and then a flute is added. The effect is wonderful- almost hallucinogenic. It all sounds very acoustic though I am sure some of the sound sources are electronic or have been manipulated somewhat. The rhythm changes but is just as captivating on 'Flesh Reaper'. If you're in the right mood and 'tuned in' this wonderful gently pulsating music could take you anywhere. We finish with a chaotic montage of sound which acts as a bridge leading to 'Mind Tunnel'. Order, of a sort, is gradually regained as more rhythmic / percussive effects take hold. The flute comes back but this time is played in a more stormy than tranquil fashion as the music takes on an uneasy, slightly threatening twist.

We move into 'The Insane Brightness' on the back of gentle low drones with delicate piano notes adding a little detail. Screeching sounds mutate into a melancholy lead line, simple but extremely beautiful in its own way. 'Luminous Progression' begins with another distorted cacophony of sound and as with 'Mind Tunnel' an infectious rhythm is added but this time the chaos continues to battle with it for supremacy, the struggle between order and disorder creating an odd slightly disturbing aural effect. 'Artificial Repose' gradually brings some calm to the chaos, the nerves being soothed by a gently played ethnic sounding flute- there is still a slightly uneasy edge however. Rhythm returns on 'The Seeker and the Spell' but it is a lovely haunting flute sound which attracted my attention most. It is similar in both sound and the way it is played to something I remember from TD's 'Alpha Centauri'. The setting in which it is used is very different here however, the hypnotic drumming somehow putting the mind into a state where the flute can penetrate deep into the consciousness. I know that sounds rather pretentious but after listening to this track I hope you will see what I mean.

The drums on the next track 'Simulate' grab hold of the mind even more than on the previous number. By the half way mark the complex collection of sounds and effects that had always been present have risen in intensity where as the drums seem to have weakened though they still had a firm grip on my concentration. When they disappear my mind is left to float again. More rhythms return on 'Tremor'. They begin extremely quietly and start to increase in intensity but it is all done so slowly it is hard to be actually sure they are getting louder. Then that beautiful haunting flute sound I mentioned on 'The Seeker and the Spell' returns combining with the rhythm probably even better here than before.

The flute becomes more shrill on the shortish 'The Bleak Inferno', sounding rather manic. The last note from this track being sustained for a long time into the final number 'Descent'. A feeling of uneasiness is retained right until the end as a combination of manipulated sounds ebb and flow around each other. For the most part this is quite a dark but highly rhythmic album. I found it enjoyable but at the same time a little disturbing- which is of course a good thing. (DL)

Een combinatie van diepe drums en percussieve effecten starten deze cd, vooraleer enkele delicate klanken worden toegevoegd. Deze komen meer op de voorgrond tezamen met een fluit. Een heel mooi effect - hallucinogerend. Het klinkt allemaal vrij akoestisch, toch denk ik dat er heel wat elektronica aan te pas kwam. Het ritme verandert maar is even boeiend in "Flesh Reaper".

Als je ervoor in de juiste stemming bent, brengt deze track je naar overal. We eindigen met een chaotische montage om dan over te gaan naar "Mind Tunnel". De orde komt terug met ritme en percussieve effecten. De fluit komt ook terug maar ditmaal een beetje stormachtiger, waardoor de muziek dreigender en moeilijker wordt. We komen bij "The Insane Brightness", pianoklanken drijvend op een donkere zware basis. Krijsende klanken muteren tot een melancholische solo, simpel, maar mooi op zijn eigen manier.

"Luminous Progression" begint ook met een kakofonie, maar zoals ook bij "Mind Tunnel" volgt er een aanstekelijk ritme. Ditmaal duurt de chaos echter voort en wordt oppermachtig. Het gevecht tussen orde en wanorde geeft verstorende auditieve effecten. "Artificial Repose" brengt terug kalmte na de chaos, de zenuwen kalmerend door het gebruik van een rustige etnische fluit - toch is er nog steeds een ongemakkelijk gevoel.

Het ritme keert weer op "The Seeker and the Spell", maar het is vooral de mooie spookachtige fluit de het meeste mijn aandacht trekt. Het deed me even denken aan iets wat ik hoorde op TD's "Alpha Centauri". Het gevoel is wel anders, het hypnotische gedrum brengt je geest in een staat waardoor de fluit zich diep kan binnendringen in je onderbewuste. Dit klinkt misschien vrij pretentieus, maar na het te beluisteren hoop ik dat je begrijpt wat ik bedoel. De drums op de volgende track "Simulate" grijpen nog meer in op je geest. In de helft van het nummer is de intensiteit aan klanken en effecten zo gegroeid dat de drums schijnen te minderen, toch bleven ze mijn aandacht vragen. Als ze dan helemaal wegvallen begint mijn geest terug te drijven.

Terug meer ritme op "Tremor". Het begint heel rustig en wordt dan langzaam luider en luider. Dan komt de spookachtige fluit uit "The Seeker and the Spell" terug opzetten, terug zo'n mooie combinatie, misschien nog mooier dan daarvoor. De fluit wordt scheller bij het korte "The Bleak Inferno", een nogal depressief nummer. Hiervan wordt de laatste noot aangehouden tot "Descent". Een gevoel van onbehaaglijkheid blijft tot het einde, gevormd door eb/vloed combinaties.
