Dom F. Scab Twelve Stories |
A slow rhythmic loop punctuates some really effective eerie pads at the beginning of the opener 'Complicity'. A sequence starts up increasing the excitement and giving proceedings real oomph. This is superb moody stuff sounding like a track from Tangerine Dream's 'Thief' and just the sort of thing that will have any lover of melodic upbeat sequencer music in raptures. An extremely impressive opener.
'This is Relative' has a fairly reflective beginning but it isn't long before a rapid sequence bursts through, becoming more and more urgent by the second. An additional sequence falls into step. It is a track all about blistering bubbling pulsations. There is a melody but it is subtle providing just a little colouring amongst the power. 'About the Madness' is a short atmospheric number perfectly placed, giving the album balance. It is also of the highest quality and again reminded me of a TD soundtrack but this time one of the better moments from 'Wavelength'. 'I'm Sorry, but we have moved to Saturn' has a suitably cosmic but also melancholy beginning. Lonesome pads float through the ether with some effective percussive detail giving just a hint of structure. A delicate piano lead adds even more atmosphere. Again, beautiful stuff.
'Brief Fable' however deploys the sequencer right from the off which seems to morph into a bell type sound then another more conventional sequence comes to join it. As with the second track its energy and movement which feature more than melody. 'Parent-thesis' deploys the sequencer yet again but this time of the more tuneful variety bouncing along nicely, juxtapositioned by some lovely delicate backing which again has a rather melancholy feel. The sequence then changes to an exquisite 'White Eagle' or even 'Logos' type. There are so many wonderful twist and turns in this track. Dom's own inventiveness is allowed to shine; he doesn't just rely on influences from the masters though when these do show through they are extremely strong and well done in a similar way to how Arcane would do it. 'Ninju' has a brooding atmospheric beginning with tinkling little lead line. A slow rhythm starts up then another wonderfully melodic sequence and we start to bounce along energetically until the last couple of minutes where we return to an excellent moody close.
'Crossed Thoughts' has a slow rhythmic beginning combining nicely with a sparingly used piano motif then another fantastic sequence surges forward. Two and a half minutes in, the sequences depart and we are left with more melodic motifs. This lasts a couple of minutes then the sequences slowly return gradually getting louder until the end. It is quite a complex track but also very effective. 'Interior Travel' is another quiet reflective floater with a lovely moody flute and slight Eastern feel, reminding me a little of Kitaro or early Deuter. 'Imaginary Moment' takes us back to sequencer territory and rather superb they are too covering all ends of the sonic spectrum. This time I am reminded of a combination of Rolf Trostel, Wolfgang Duren and AirSculpture. I loved it! 'A Reasonable Whim' begins with lovely gentle piano backed by some equally pleasant soft pads all going together to create quite a gorgeous interlude.
As I expected 'Elementary' picks up the pace again, initially a swirling sequence taking centre stage augmented by delicate melodic touches. Yet again 'Thief' came to mind. In the third minute a more bass heavy sequence comes in but without completely acting like a steam roller, it still gets the feet moving finishing the album off on a high. There are so many tracks on this album which will bring a smile to the majority of our customers. Highly recommended. (DL)
