Ian Boddy
The Unexplained
CD / 23 tracks plus edits / 57.30 mins plus edits

What we have here is another one of Ian's Library Discs. In other words relatively short tracks, between the two and three minute mark, plus edits made for the film and TV industry. The theme of this one is Mysterious Moods and Atmospheres.

'Not of This World' is based round an ominous pulsing loop over undulating, fizzing drones. The title track, 'Visions', 'Ether' and 'Power of the Mind' feature moody ethereal pads and are really quite tranquil. The last of these also makes use of really nice repeated arpeggios. 'Phobia', 'All in the Mind', 'Close Encounter' and 'Sense of Loss' are eerie atmospheric floaters creating a sense that something rather unpleasant is just around the next corner. 'Ancient Voices' again uses ethereal vocal sounding pads but this time with an imposing, mysterious feel.

'Uncertain' and 'The House' have a similar atmos to 'Phobia'. They aren't as floating however, instead featuring a rather sinister melody. 'Possessed' dispenses with all melody and structure, consisting of chilling atmospheric textures and effects. A good one for Halloween I think! 'Timescape' and 'Into the Dark' are similar but without the effects. Even so they still manage to conjure up images of a bleak and desolate landscape. 'Eternal Life' and 'Lost in Space' are a little like 'Visions' but with added Enya type stylings. The last of these even manages to sound like something from a 50s Sci-Fi film! 'Other Beings' is well named as it certainly has an alien landscape feel to it with little tinkling effects that could well be strange creatures scuttling around.

'A Mystery' consists of sawing strings and percussion. It has an extremely classical sound to it and is as moody as hell. One of my favourite tracks here. 'Apparition' uses sinister sounding rhythms, percussion and effects resulting in another very impressive number. We finish in a more optimistic frame of mind with 'Into the Light 1 & 2' making use of tinkling little sequences and joyful lead lines. Quite a contrast to the rest of the CD really! (DL - with quite a bit of help from the sleeve notes!)
