Eric van der Heijden
Universal Time Zone
Originally released back in 1992, here we have the original album repackaged by Groove (and for completists the cover is slightly different). I did buy the album when it first came out, and I must admit in 6 or 7 years it has not been a regular visitor to my CD player. This may come as a surprise to others who bought the original, because I have heard more than one person give it a rave review. The music is primarily sequence based and builds carefully in each track to produce some complex patterns. Melody also features highly, though it’s clear that this album’s strengths are rhythmic rather than thematic. Most of the tracks hover around the 10 minute mark so they have plenty of time to develop, and the opening trio use the space to good effect. None of the pieces particularly stand out, however this is a very consistent CD which generally keeps the attention throughout and if you fancy hearing where EM was coming from in the early 90’s here’s your chance.
