This sampler is the first release by the Databloem label. It seems that they have something of an agenda, shaking the Electronic Music world up a little maybe. The first track 'Aperture' is by The Circular Ruins. A CD by them / him 'Realm of Possibility' is the second release on the label (see review elsewhere). This piece is not on that CD. A deep vibrating drone hovers in the air like some huge insect then a lovely deep sequence enters forming a hypnotic groove. Some very faint vocal samples can just be heard though I can't make out what they are saying. In the fourth minute another simple slow rhythm is added. From time to time it has a slight irregularity to it. This skipping of the beat is fascinating and adds extra interest to an already excellent number. There is a brooding atmosphere which only subsides in the eighth minute as all syncopation disappears and we are left with some lovely textures which decay beautifully as others come to replace them. A minute later the sequences return.

'Kwookyworld' by Kwook begins with the sound of what could be some accelerating vehicle. A mean sequence starts to emerge, rising and falling in the mix. This is underpinned by another light sequence / shimmer which stays fairly constant in the middle of the mix. I found it very relaxing and just let my mind float on the back of the gentle pulsations. In the ninth minute we get a calmer passage made up of soft ambient effects. A short vocal sample as well as the occasional nature sound made me think of a beautiful alien landscape, ethereal pads adding to the tranquil feeling still further. 'Encounter' by the Civilized Electrons starts extremely quietly, soft tones being allowed to just hang in the air. In the third minute in comes the most beautiful dreamy melody which goes through a number of mutations in both structure as well as the sound chosen. It just gets better and better.

A four note loop works its way into your consciousness, it had probably been there slowly intensifying for some time before I actually noticed it. Gradually it becomes more like a pulse or soft throb. The repeated melody has something of a hypnotic quality but is never boring. An additional lead line is added in the tenth minute eventually replacing its predecessor, another slow delicate melody complimenting it wonderfully lower in the mix. Its all so delicate. A wonderful track to finish a very impressive album. (DL)

Nederlandstalige versie

Deze verzamelaar is de eerste uitgave van het Databloem label. Zij blijken een agenda te hebben die de EM wereld wat door elkaar gaat schudden. De eerste track is "Aperture" van The Circular Ruins (zie hun full CD bespreking elders). Dit stuk staat niet op die CD. Een diepe pulserende drone zweeft door de lucht als een insect, dan komt er een diepe sequence bij die werkt als een hypnotiserende groove. Enkele hele vage stemsamples op de achtergrond maar ik kan niet uitmaken wat ze zeggen. Rond de vierde minuut komt er nog een traag ritme bij. Van tijd tot tijd wordt dit wat onregelmatig en dit springen van de beat is fascinerend en maakt de interesse, van dit al zeer goede stuk, alleen maar groter. De atmosfeer is broeierig en dit wijkt alleen als rond de achtste minuut alle syncopes wegvallen en we achterblijven met enkele mooie bewegingen, welke dan langzaam vervangen worden door andere. Een minuut later komt de sequence terug.

"A Borrowed Skin" van Mutagene is een geweldige track. Op een bepaalde wijze is het vrij simpel, enkel bestaande uit een achtergrond drone met een traag herhalend ritmisch patroon, maar het stuk is veel beter dan dat ik hier kan beschrijven. De melodie is superb alsook de gekozen klanken. De manier waarop de klanken in en om elkaar bewegen is zo goed gevonden. "Sperroid" door Imbedded Neptune start donker en kosmisch. Extreem diepe basdrones doen de vloer schudden. Rond de vierde minuut wordt het wat rustiger als een geplukte string solo zichzelf een net weeft rond allerlei spacey effecten. Deze verdwijnen om af en toe terug te komen terwijl wij verder drijven op zachte tapijtjes en kosmische effecten. Eerste klasse space muziek maar zoals alles op deze CD/dit label zijn de gekozen klanken een openbaring. "Kwookyworld" door Kwook begint met iets dat lijkt op een vertrekkend voertuig. Een felle sequence duikt op en gaat hoger en lager in de mix. Ik vond dit heel relaxerend en liet mijn geest de vrije loop. Een onderliggende sequence blijft constant in het midden van de mix. Rond de negende minuut krijgen we een rustige passage met zachte ambient effecten. Een korte stemsample, zowel als toevallige natuurgeluiden, deden me denken aan een uitgesproken mooi buitenaards landschap, etnische klanken versterken dit gevoel nog meer.
