Namlook & Spyra
Virtual Vices
Here we have the third Spyra release on the FAX label, and this time Mr Namlook himself has joined the party.

First on the podium is ‘Futurescope’ (15:18) which opens with extensive textures of gossamer delicacy before a stabbing rhythm intrudes at the 4 minute mark. This is a welcome intrusion however, constructed from all manner of vox and effects which explore both ends of the sound spectrum. In classic fashion the acres of space between the delicate ether pads and the sharp rhythmics are left largely unoccupied, giving the soundstage an expansive feel. Guitar style detail and rasping synth sweeps complete the picture.

The 11 minute title track follows, and what a corker this is! Subtle background rhythmics reminiscent of the Art of Noise (‘Moments in Love’) is complemented by the choicest themes picked out on acoustic guitar synth and pads. And to top it all, the next track ‘Deu Sex Machine’(12:54) takes the same foundations and supplements them with superb sequential detail and demon synth leads.

Finally we have ‘Ancient Industry’(16:22) which opens with restrained pulsations and some immense sonic sweeps. The sequential backbone fades into subliminal resonance at times before returning from the brink. Subtle effects flesh out the sound and the result is an epic piece which fans of top notch Space Music will surely find essential listening.

It is fair to say that since his sublime ‘Future of the Past’ album Spyra has been gradually coaxing his fans away from the main-stream of sequenced grooves, instead serving up sublime tangential avenues which I for one have followed with relish. This album continues that trend. It’s certainly no traditional sequenced stomper, but neither is it an album which is difficult to get on with - and that’s the trump card. This is ambient/chill with an appealing edge and accessibility which is hard to resist. In fact, it’s impossible to resist. (GG)
