What we have here is a re-issue of David's second cassette only album. It shows him refining his style, some of the tracks being much more recognisable to fans of his better known CD albums. The production is also better and the overall quality of composition higher than on his first album 'Reflections' (reviewed in an earlier mag). Occasionally however the sound quality did suffer due to the limitations of the source material. 'Islands' starts with sizzling warbling drones which are then replaced by lush symphonic pads and a tinkling lead line low in the mix. Its a lovely combination of beauty and melancholy. 'Emerald Eyes' is a gentle rhythmic number with something of a playful bounce to it. 'Shadowlands' is a wonderful, carefully crafted track. It develops so delicately with just the right piano touch here, brass sound there. Added detail is provided by the occasional rhythmic flourish and a feeling of movement created by a simple echoing two note loop. Its very inventive. A plucked strings sequence provides the backbone for 'Lovelight'. The overall feel is light and somewhat whimsical but not overly mushy.

'Cloudless Flight' is another melodic rhythmic number with some effective dramatic synth stabs. Just when the attention was starting to wander its all change, things are stripped down to a ticking high hat loop, soft lead line and hardly noticeable pads adding just a little colour but then the synth stabs come back with added vigour taking us to the close. 'Desert Storm' begins with a sequence low in the mix but develops into a sweet melodic track featuring brass sounds in the lead role over ethereal pads, the rhythm having a faintly military feel to it. This is certainly at the slushier end of David's work, his fans might like it but it was a bit sweet for my tastes. I think the main melody was recycled for one of Dave's later albums but I could be wrong. 'Lady in the Night' was also somewhat too pleasant and easy listening for me. 'Rainwalker' if anything is even more jolly, piano and other melodies bouncing over the top of a slow steady drum beat. 'Always' adds a little melancholy to the mood of the previous few tracks, string sounds and waves breaking on the shore being the order of the day. Rhythm is absent allowing us to gently float along on the back of the melody.

The drums return on 'Run for the Sun' and though they sounded a little basic David could get away with it because of the generally happy, carefree nature of the track. When the rhythm momentarily departs the mood becomes somewhat darker but this is only a short interlude before melodically we return to similar realms as earlier but the feel is slightly less happy. Finally we get the title track. A piano breaks through a barrage of massed strings providing one of the best lead lines on the entire album- beautiful. The track continues in the strings / piano mode and is quite delightful certainly the best track from David up to that point. More strings are added near the end to give added umph and something of an epic quality. (DL)

Dit is een heruitgave van David zijn 2e cassette album. Hij verfijnt hier zijn stijl, de tracks zijn meer gelijkend op zijn bekendere cd's. De productie is beter en de kwaliteit veel hoger dan op zijn eerste album "Reflections" (besproken in een vorig magazine). Af en toe laat de geluidskwaliteit toch te wensen over door de beperkingen van het bronmateriaal. "Islands" begint met dwarrelende klanken die dan vervangen worden door symfonische tapijtjes en een twinkelende solo, laag in de mix. Een mooie combinatie van schoonheid en melancholie. "Emerald Eyes" is een lief ritmisch nummer. "Shadowlands" is een mooie krachtvolle track. Deze ontwikkelt zich zo delicaat, met de juiste pianotoetsen hier, de juiste koperklanken daar. Meer details komen van een toevallig ritme en een gevoel van beweging, gecreëerd door een simpele echo op een 2-noten loopje. Zeer goed gevonden.

Geplukte strings zorgen voor de ruggengraat van "Lovelight", een vrij lichte track. "Cloudless Flight" is meer een ritmisch, melodisch nummer met zeer effectieve synthuithalen. Wanneer de aandacht wat dreigt weg te ebben, verandert het nummer en blijft er enkel nog een hihat loopje over. Een solo en een juist nog hoorbaar tapijtje brengen weer wat kleur tot de synthuithalen er terug zijn. "Desert Storm" begint met een sequence laag in de mix maar evolueert dan naar een melodische track, bijna met een militair ritme. Toch is dit een slapper werk van David, het kan goed bevonden worden door zijn fans maar ik vond het wat te zoet. Ik denk ook dat de hoofdmelodie later gerecycleerd werd in één van David's latere albums, maar ik kan fout zijn. "Lady in the Night" klonk ook iets te plezant en easy listening voor mij. "Rainwalker" is ook prettig, met piano- en andere melodieën en een trage drum erbovenop. "Always" brengt er een beetje melancholie in, met wat strings en golven op de voorgrond. Ritme is totaal afwezig en dit nummer laat het dus toe om zachtjes op de melodie te zweven. Drums keren terug op "Run for the Sun" en hoewel deze vrij basis klinken doen ze toch eer aan dit blije, zorgenvrije nummer. Als de drums even verdwijnen wordt het gevoel wat donkerder, maar dit is tijdelijk, dan keren ze terug maar het blije gevoel is toch iets minder.
