Karda Estra
A Winter in Summertime

Now for something completely different. Female wordless vocals float over what sounds like synthesized metallic waves and synth pads. Add to this a beautiful piano lead line, flute and clarinet and the result is akin to a combination of Electronic, Classical, Film and Avant Garde Musics. The musicianship here is quite simply stunning. 'Proper Music' as my other half would call it (but what does she know). The second part is no less filmatic but is also much more rhythmic. The bass piano chords are particularly effective. The third part is similar to the first with the addition of guitar. Cool, very cool in fact. Part four 'The Excavation Site' still makes heavy use of string pads but has a slightly weirder edge to it. Part five 'Transference' is the most rhythmic piece so far and is very uplifting, the vocal even getting close to 'singing'. Part six 'Nightfall' has the guitar picking out the melody over a symphonic backing, very peaceful.
The last section 'Fatal Flaw' is less than three minutes in length and yet it packs in so much, the overall mood being one of great loss. It also ends rather abruptly as if there should really be more to follow. Much of the music on this album has an other worldly feel to it and there is no way you can knock the standard of composition or production but it might be a bit difficult for some. If you fancy trying something to stretch your musical tastes then try here. (DL)
