Andy Pickford
Works Volume 2 (Live at Derby Guildhall)
|
Many of these tracks are live reworkings from the 'Maelstrom' album, a classic.
The opener 'The Girl From Planet X' is a great way to start, overflowing with catchy melodies and some well placed vocoder vocals. Next up we have my all time favourite Pickford track, 'Cathedral'. If there is one track I would play someone who said vocals and EM don't go together it would be this one, surely this piece would touch and move anybody. Moving on to 'Hellsgate', as you would expect from such a title it is no lullaby! Pitch bending all over the place we build and build from the opening melody to a real scorcher. This leads into 'The Silent Vigil' a very laid back and melancholy track providing contrast from what has gone before. I really like the start to 'Akira', all swirls and half heard vocals leading us into a piece that chugs along nicely and that really gets the feet moving. The next two tracks were both to appear on Andy's last studio album 'Xenomorph'. 'Sarcophagus' provides a perfect build up to 'In Solitudes Shadow', another real power drive. The final live track 'Sayonara' first saw the light of day on Andy's first CD 'Replicant' and is even more beautiful in this setting. There are also two bonus studio tracks on this album, 'Hellfire' and 'Into the Blue' lasting almost quarter of an hour. Well what can I say! No sorry I have decided not to tell you, buy the album and give them a listen, you won't be disappointed you did. (DL)
