Steve Roach is acclaimed by most people as the most influential Electronic Musician from the USA. These two albums were recorded during the mid to late eighties and are both inspired by the deserts of the world. ‘Quiet Music’ would be pigeon holed by most as space music. It provides the isolation to let ones mind and imagination wander. This music floats away without rhythm or identifiable structure and creates pictures of beautiful yet immense landscapes where it would be possible to both find or lose yourself. Good grief, if I keep going on like this I might break out into poetry but like poetry some people will find this type of music beautiful and others will just think it is meaningless twaddle. ‘Western Spaces’ on the other hand whilst still using delicate floating chords is more structured with gentle melodies shimmering over the top like a heat haze. On the opening track ‘The Breathing Stone’ there is even a rhythmic element though in keeping with the overall laid back feel it doesn’t exactly let rip. For most of the rest of the album drifting picture music is the dominant quality. So to sum up these two albums are ideal for relaxation, not heart racing excitement. (DL)
