Telomere
Zoetosis
CD / 7 tracks / 54.35 mins

If you like the pure floating space sounds of the mighty Serge synthesizer, featured on such classic works as Michael Stearns' Planetary Unfolding, then you could do far worse than to pick up a copy of Telomere's Zoetosis. This is a soothing, swirling, deep space journey. 'Awakening' starts with softly lapping ocean waves, which soon recede, taken over by the expansive sounds of the Serge. Layers of big, rolling swells of space music are like big billowy pillows. You just kind of lay back and say "ahhhh, this is the life." The deep space theme continues on 'Microcosmos,' and throughout the disc, for that matter. Gentle, rolling pulses of sound amid softly shifting textural sonic layers create a very nice ebb and flow. The track builds subtly, gaining a shimmering quality as it goes on. Again it's hard not to think of Stearns' space classic, but that's not a bad thing. 'Idochrome' has a slightly more active pulse behind it, but still is deep into the floating element as well.

'Ancient Uplift' begins with low rumbling sounds, and a smattering of sci-fi bleeps and blips in the upper register. A more abstract piece than those preceding, it remains somewhat minimal, using long, sustained synth tones sweeping in and out, as it drops to near silence in between the tones. This is a delicate piece that ever-so-slightly gains momentum as it goes, one of my favourites on the disc. 'Evocation' switches back to low pulses and layer upon layer of shimmering brightness, which gradually take over as they become more intense, cresting and receding toward the end. 'Dawnlight' has subtle changes in timbre that give it a slightly different mood, a little darker possibly, but also very beautiful. 'First Forest' begins and ends with birds, but otherwise continues to evoke images of space, not trees. I've already mentioned low pulses in the mix of several tracks, but the simple, two-note pulse that opens this track is the best of the bunch. It is a classic space motif that isn't fancy, but it just sounds cool – which is a good description of the disc as a whole. (PD)
